Born in Blackness vitally reframes the story of medieval and emerging Africa, demonstrating how the economic ascendancy of Europe, the anchoring of democracy in the West, and the fulfillment of so-called Enlightenment ideals all grew out of Europe's dehumanizing engagement with the "dark" continent. George Granville Monah James was a Guyanese-American historian and author. His 1954 book Stolen Legacy argues that Greek philosophy and religion originated in ancient Egypt. James contends that Greek philosophy was based on ideas and concepts borrowed from the ancient Egyptians. He argues that when Alexander the Great invaded Egypt, he captured the Royal Library at Alexandria and that Egyptian ideas then spread to Greece.

Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) was an orator of Black Nationalism, and founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League. He advanced a Pan-African philosophy which inspired a global movement, known as Garveyism. This book, The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey (1923) was compiled by his wife, Amy Euphemia Jacques Garvey, mainly from his speeches. Promoting unity between Africans and the African diaspora, he campaigned for an end to European colonial rule in Africa and encouraged the political unification of the continent.
