About this listen

The jungle, 1949: Everyone said it was impossible, dangerous, and unwise. Three expeditions mounted by men had failed. How could one led by a woman succeed? “Don’t be a fool. You’ll die out there,” a friend whispered to Ruth. But a siren haunted her dreams, calling to her. She had no choice but to follow it into the deepest, darkest jungle in the world, a decision that would change her life forever.

Houston, 1993: A violent storm pummels the Gulf Coast. Fleeing from her abusive husband, Gabby Jordan becomes disoriented and lost. After a terrifying escape, she happens upon a convenience store bulletin board that leads her to the ramshackle, riverside house of a woman named Ruth. As Gabby’s husband hunts her down, intent on revenge, Gabby and Ruth rely on their instincts and each other to fight for survival.

Inspired by the true story of a woman explorer, Angel Falls is a poignant, inspirational tale of two women who join forces to fight a deadly enemy and, in the process, confront painful pasts to find peace with long-hidden secrets.

The title of my review is the unusual technique and style that made this listen so unique. I wasn't sure when I started listening if I would actually continue...slow start and not with a style that kept my focus. When it did "speed up", I became fascinated with each story and the need to enjoy the audio journey as well as rising curiosity to see what would happen in both stories as they eventually became truly woven together. Ruth's story definitely had the biggest hold on my attention throughout and the audio journey became a very clearly portrayed trek for all my senses.

Two stories woven to one

Kathryn Casey’s “Angel Falls” actually follows the lives of two amazing women… one’s story from the 1940s… the other’s from the 1990s… and their coming together. Casey introduces us to Ruth Robertson in her 80s, an amazing woman with quite an adventurous background. Ruth was real… Gabby, who befriended her, is suffering great trauma. Coming together through store owner, Nick, their stories unfold and friendships develop. Gabby is strengthened through these two to try and reclaim her life. Two stories of great resilience… and characters you will grow to love. A beautiful book and very good narration. Highly recommend!

Another amazing woman to remember!

Kathryn did such an incredible job tying the two stories together. I love her writing and this lived up to her other books! If you are already a fan, you will love this. If you haven’t read one of her fiction books yet, I highly recommend this book.

Loved it!

I listened to the audiobook on this title. It held my attention from the start. The character development was very good and I found them to be realistic and very likeable. It’s a story within a story and Ms. Casey wound them together beautifully. I was a bit disappointed at the end because all of a sudden it was over.

Captivating read

As a huge Kathryn Casey true crime fan, I wasn’t sure what to expect with historical fiction. I was pleasantly surprised to find an interesting story within a story. Kathryn was able to weave both stories together in a way that kept me wondering what would happen next. Anyone looking for a little bit of intrigue and adventure would like this book. Narration was up to par, also. No complaints.

Two stories in one!

The lack of any excitement whatsoever in this book. Should have been 2 separate books as one story had nothing to do with the other.

Boring with no plot
