About this listen

In the hustle of modern technology it might seem odd to discover an angel surfing the Internet, but what an interesting paradox that would be. Here, in Andrew M. Greeley's fine tale of young love and faith, Toby Tobin considers the peculiar terms of his great-uncle's will. Ten million dollars, a required visit to Ireland, ending a Tobin family feud, and a request to court his eight cousin once removed, Sara Elizabeth Anne Tobin. No wonder is a bit wary. But, he cannot help staring at the picture of Sara with her gorgeous black hair, blue eyes and pale skin. He logs onto the Internet to find out about airline tickets to Ireland and finds himself chatting with an odd travel agent named Raphael. Or Raphaela you might say. She is a angel who decided to surf the net to find out what humans are up to. She will be his guardian angel on his trip to Ireland. It's a good thing because Toby is in for the meeting of his life, a centuries-old mystery and more. His tart-tongued angel friend proves the perfect travel companion in a tale fresh as the Internet and as classic as the sweetest love stories ever told.©2006 Andrew Greeley (P)2009 Phoenix Fantasy Fiction Romance Ireland

Angel light dimmed

numerous passages were omitted and the original storyline fragmented. I didn't expect an incomplete reading

Over Too Soon

Loved it, as I do most of Greeley's, but 'tis too short altogether! As usual, there were characters I cared about, but I wish the book had explored other characters more fully. It felt as if just as the story was getting good, it was over.

5 stars aren't enough

Listening to Chapter one, I am reminded this is one of my two favorite authors (Greeley and Gabaldon).

The voice actor is not Jack Fox but he gives great character individuation with great /excellent accents. I heard some accent inconsistencies, especially for Sarah Ann.

Terrible Irish accents mar a great story

I had read this book at least six times, possibly more and really liked it. I was looking foward to hearing the audio version but...oh, no, no, no! The narrator butchered the Irish accent and made this experience awful. Seriously, WHY didn't somebody stop this guy? He sounded much too old to be Paddy Tobin, as well.

My advice? Stay far, far away from this narration!

Originality

Loved the spiritual aspect woven into the story along with the background of a family saga and curse. Loved it!

Abridged version cuts away the meat of the story

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

If you do not have time to listen to a full book and just want a short story, then listen to a short story not a badly abridged version of a novel. If you have no intention to reading the whole book, still don't listen to this.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Whoever was in charge of deciding what points were not important enough to the story line has never actually read this book. The result of their work is a story that has no character development or reader investment in the story line. I am not saying that nothing should be cut when making an abridged version, but abridging a story to the point were dialogue no longer makes sense and character motivation is no longer clear makes the story pointless.
