About this listen

Dermot Michael Coyne of Chicago goes to Ireland to uncover the true story of his grandparents, who left Ireland under a veil of mystery in the 1920s. There, Coyne meets Nuala Anne McGreal, a college student who helps him translate his grandmother's diaries. His grandparents, the O'Riadas, and the bloody history of Ireland from 1919 to 1923 are mysteriously linked to present-day peace talks between the Irish and English. The investigators learn the talks - and their own lives - hang in the balance unless they can uncover the secret of the O'Riadas and one of history's great mysteries - the murder of Michael Collins, the one man who could have ended the unrest.©1994 by Andrew M. there's a part of this book where they start alternating from regular sound to one that almost has an echo. when you listen pay close attention because this is done for an effect so you can distinguish between the present day people and those of the past. I found that quite clever once I figured it out but I had to replay the first section they do this in. if you're looking for a short listening that's a good book you'll find this one very to your liking I hope

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I loved the Bishop goes books, but this book was not worth the price or my time. The story line and the characters had lots of potential but they never got close to their potential.

Would you ever listen to anything by Andrew M. Greeley again?

yes.

Not as good as the Bishop series

It makes you think about the struggle for independence and how it impacted a generation of Irish Americans close ties to the old country. As it still does today!

Great Irish story!

I was most disappointed that I missed the fact that this was an abridged version of the book. Too much necessary information was edited out. The story was confusing and difficult to follow.

Disappointed.
