About this listen

Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables is one of the best loved Canadian books of all time. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, middle-aged brother & sister, live together at Green Gables, their farm on Prince Edward Island. They decide to adopt a boy from an orphanage in Nova Scotia to help out on the farm. Through a series of mishaps, the child that arrives at their door is not a boy, but Anne Shirley, a precocious 11 year old girl! Anne is bright, quick, and eager to please, but dissatisfied with her name, her pale countenance dotted with freckles, and her long braids of red hair. Anne takes much joy in life, and adapts quickly, thriving in the environment of Prince Edward Island.

Quaint, cute, engaging & tender

Giving a tougher review than an all round 5* proved impossible!

Anne of Green Gables is an old fashioned 'butter wouldn't melt in your mouth' classic filled with sweet sentiments and conjuring up a very comforting vision of days gone by... And even if those days are slightly Disneyfied peachy perfect who cares :)

The facts: A story about a slightly peculiar yet delightful orphan girl who gets adopted 'by mistake' by an aging brother and sister. Anne melts their hearts in the process of growing up and exceeds their, and her own, expectations - via a number of amusing scrapes and mishaps.

In a word, charming!

A wonderful gem of a story with great naration.

Despite being a "middle-aged" woman, I enjoyed this delightful tale of Anne and her her unfailing optimism.

Loved it!

My 10 year old and I listened to this while driving and cleaning and it kept us entertained, amused, and interested. We loved the story, the characters, and the narration. Well worth the price.

Re-enchanted With a Childhood Favorite

It's been several decades since I read this book so, on a whim, I picked up this audio edition for a re-read.

I was captivated once again by the little redheaded orphan who found her way into the hearts of lonely Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert and made her place in the little Prince Edward Island town of Avonlea. Marilla remains a favorite, I found, while smiling over the many dialogues between she and Anne. I giggled at the school scenes as Anne established her place among the other children. I sighed over her childhood fancies and friendship with Diana. And yep, cried once again over dear Matthew.

The story lost none of it's charm this many years later.

Laural Merlington was a new to me narrator. I easily fell in tune with her storytelling and voice for Anne and the others. I thought she did a lovely job with such a cast of characters and range of emotions.

All in all, this was a rather delightful revisit and now I want to listen to the rest of the series if I can find them.

Ok but cut the music!

Good narator but music between chapters or anywhere else drives me crazy. Its short and hasn't kept me from listening to this book over and over but I still hate the blooming music. I love the book itself though.
