About this listen

Critically acclaimed author Kathryn Cushman explores difficult social issues. Here, she tackles the child vaccination debate in a gripping portrait of life’s uncertainties. At her sister’s insistence, Grace Graham returns to backwoods Shoal Creek, Tennessee, with her four-year-old son in tow. As Grace struggles to reconnect with her estranged father, her unvaccinated son becomes ground-zero for a measles outbreak. But should she take her son and run—or stay and help?

Eye opening and well written!

I really enjoyed this book and was surprised at all the emotion I felt. Kathryn does a amazing job covering both sides of the vaccination debate, so much so you can't tell what side she is on and I still don't know. The main character Grace has good intentions but finds herself in the center of a measles outbreak, after she had made a decision not to vaccinate her son. I loved the character Ms. Fox and thought her news articles, were brave, educational and did a great job covering both sides of the vaccine debate. The book reminds me that people should respect other's decisions, while encouraging people to make informed and educated choices.

WOW! Just wow!

Would you consider the audio edition of Another Dawn to be better than the print version?

I don't know, actually. This is the first book I listened to that I hadn't read yet! I'm very glad that I did!

What other book might you compare Another Dawn to and why?

There is nothing to compare it to!! I read mostly historical romances, and this was a (happy!) break from the norm.

What does Therese Plummer bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The wonderful southern accents. Even though I live in a southern state, I wouldn't have read the book the same way she acted it out. I loved how in the parts that the main character became emotional, her Californian accent slipped a bit and incorporated a bit of 'southern'. It was just a brilliant performance all around.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I listened to this book mostly at work, leaving the last few hours (due to happenstance) to listen to at home. I am so glad I didn't hear the climax while at work-- If I had, I would have been very embarrassed. I was BAWLING at the climax, tears streaming down my face as I listened. It was a really great part of the story and one I want to go back and listen to again just because.

Any additional comments?

I got this audio book on a whim because I had read one of her other books (Going Amish). This book, Another Dawn, is so much deeper than the summary would have you think. It's a story of hurt, trouble, forgiveness, and love, all the while teaching you something. It laid bare the facts of a huge argument aroused by event in the book, and let you fairly see all the sides. It did have romance in it, but it's not the main focus of the story. If this story doesn't have you bawling in tears by the end of it, I'd be surprised. I loved this book and am VERY glad I got it!
