About this listen

Leila Meacham is a gift to readers everywhere.—Adriana Trigiani

A seemingly perfect suburban housewife is being pursued by a private detective . . . and hunted by a murderer in this riveting, much-anticipated posthumous novel from the beloved author of Roses and Dragonfly.

Kathryn Walker enjoys an enviable life. Her husband is an accomplished doctor, her children are bright and successful, and she devotes herself to charity work that uplifts her Suburban Colorado community. Settling into a new year, her life couldn’t be better. . .

Until April.

For Kathryn, April has always rained trouble—but this time may be even stormier than the fraught past she’s trying to overcome. Already distraught over the child she miscarried in this same cursed month many years ago, the emotionally fragile woman isn’t ready to consider the overwhelming evidence that someone may be trying to take her husband—and her life.

Featuring the complex characters and powerful storytelling that are the beloved hallmarks of Leila Meacham’s novels beginning with her breakout debut Roses, April Storm is a thrilling triumph that caps a remarkable literary career.

Fairly short read. I realized going in that the author, Leila Meacham, had passed three or four years before the book was published. Not sure if she completed the book or if it was finished by others.
Ending is somewhat of a surprise.

I liked all the characters (except one) and I loved the story line. This was a real feel good story and the narrator did a wonderful job. I totally enjoyed listening to this book & will look for others by this author.

Feel Good Story

The narrator was very good, I really expected a different outcome. I felt sad for one character. The story kept me guessing all the way to the finish.

Did not see the end coming

I enjoyed the story and the characters in this book. After finishing, I immediately went to look for more books by this author. This was my first book I'd listened to by Leila Meacham

Enjoyable, quick read

Loved the mystery even though I was ahead of much of it. It was solid except for the ending. The ending was a sappy finish after a well done mystery as if the author didn’t know what to do and simply fell back on romance rather than sticking to the mystery genre. It came across like a paste on. I hope she gives writing mystery stories another chance and figures out how mysteries can end.

Disappointed in the romance novel ending

Leila Meaham's final book April Storm was published posthumously. It is a suspenseful story that takes I read in one sitting. It is an enjoyable story, that grabbed my attention and carried me along.

The main character, Kathryn, is a likable and relatable woman. A wife and mother of young adults. As the book opens the reader is immediately thrown into a state or worry and curiosity because someone seems to be following Kathryn. Stalking her. And as she grows more frightened, so does the reader. I also found myself frustrated with her as she didn't appear to take things as seriously as she should. She made reactionary moves instead of actionary ones. On top of everything it looks as though her marriage might be in trouble, and after so many years together, Kathryn is shocked to think about a future that might not involve her husband.

The relationships are layered and realistic. I felt as though I had become friends with Kathryn, and that she was spilling all of her worries to me over coffee.

Leila Meacham's books are incomparable to other authors. I was so excited to learn that a book had been released after her passing. What a treat. The narrator was excellent, along with the pace of the story. Her story explores the ups and downs of marriage relationships, disappointments, betrayals, career, accomplishments, and career disappointments.

Fabulous story

Admittedly, the storyline here stretched believability way too far. But, surprisingly, this made little difference in terms of my enjoyment level. I loved the the fast pace and and the likeable protagonist, and I was engaged in the tale from beginning to end. This was a true guilty pleasure.

We learn early on that the MC, Kathryn, was denied a PhD by her advisor at the last stage of the process, when she was due to defend. The author glibly writes that her advisor told her it was garbage and that was that. In real life, the last stage of PhD is largely a formality. By then, multiple committee members have read and commented. Supposedly, in this story, her advisor did not allow the other committee members to see her dissertation. Hogwash. If that had really happened, the University ombudsman and probably an independent lawyer would have been pulled in. We are asked to believe Kathryn meekly walked away after 3 years of work. Many other aspects of the story strained credulity, but that was the one I couldn't get past.

Best for readers unfamiliar with grad school

This is the most ridiculous, inane story. Obviously, the author knows little about the PhD process, Delta force, human behavior, and too many other topics to comment on. The narration was good - far better than this drivel deserved.
