About this listen

As It Turns Out is a family story. Alice Sedgwick Wohl is writing to her brother Bobby, who died in a motorcycle accident in 1965, just before their sister Edie Sedgwick met Andy Warhol. After unexpectedly coming across Edie's image in a clip from Warhol's film Outer and Inner Space, Wohl was moved to put her inner dialogue with Bobby on the page in an attempt to reconstruct Edie's life and figure out what made Edie and Andy such iconic figures in American culture. What was it about Andy that enabled him to anticipate so much of contemporary culture? Why did Edie draw attention wherever she went? Who exactly was she, who fascinated Warhol and captured the imagination of a generation?

Wohl tells the story as only a sister could, from their childhood on a California ranch and the beginnings of Edie's lifelong troubles in the world of their parents to her life and relationship with Warhol within the silver walls of the Factory, in the fashionable arenas of New York, and as projected in the various critically acclaimed films he made with her. As Wohl seeks to understand the conjunction of Edie and Andy, she writes with a keen critical eye and careful reflection about their enduring impact. As It Turns Out is a meditation addressed to her brother about their sister, about the girl behind the magnetic image, and about the culture she and Warhol introduced.

I loved the author’s voice, her manner of reading as well as her mature point of view and her writing style. Classy to say the least. Her insights into how and why her sister’s life turned out as it did were only part of the story. But it was all interesting.

A really engaging story on many different levels.

Not much is ever written about those who come from such wealth and opportunities so this was definitely a treat. Wealth,Beauty,Etc so sadly often lead to tragedy and we all chase and dream for the power of that.Edie had it all and sadly tragedy ended it all. A magical beauty A one of a kind she will never be replaced she will forever be remembered like MM. A big sister left behind on her last curtain call wishing she could have saved her…beautifully written from the heart… may they meet again young and beautiful.

Love

I absolutely loved this book. Alice Sedgwick Wohl's perspectives on the multi-layered people and times she addresses are insightful, thought-provoking and interesting. Edie, Andy, Art and society... topics of great interest to me. Very, very well done.

Cannot recommend enough. Alice illustrates a glimpse of the past through not only her own eyes, but in a certain light, she gives us the briefest glimpse through Edie’s eyes as well. The only drawdown of this book and Edie’s life was how short it was. Edie and Andy were likely and unbeknownst to themselves, product and symptom of thousands of years of unchecked greed. She was also a prophetess. It can be traced through three lies called Christianity, Judaism, and Islam and have proliferated through a systematic dumbing down of people, and now here we are in 2025. This is what happens in a world of exalting the monist masculine. They are the antithesis of Nature. Society is unbalanced, most are unaware, and it seems the entire world is on the brink of something universally feared. I, like many people who found kinship with Edie, can draw parallels from my own life to her’s, and I have found the root of the problem is lack of proper education. If Edie had been given a proper, classical Greek and Latin education who knows what she would have discovered. She absolutely had the ability. Her love for pharmakon was a gift that propelled her forward, albeit without balance and too fast. The tragedy is she didn’t reach her potential. For now, we are limited to viewing the past the way one peers inside a snow globe of the New York city skyline. If I have learned anything from Edie’s life it is that all we have is now. Thank you, Alice Sedgwick Wohl, for stewarding History forward. You did Her Justice.

This was a repetitive story told by a jealous sibling. I couldn’t wait for it to end.

Higher hopes
