About this listen

The long-awaited, enormously entertaining memoir by one of the great artists of our time.

In this candid and often hilarious memoir, the celebrated director, comedian, writer, and actor offers a comprehensive, personal look at his tumultuous life. Beginning with his Brooklyn childhood and his stint as a writer for the Sid Caesar variety show in the early days of television, working alongside comedy greats, Allen tells of his difficult early days doing standup before he achieved recognition and success. With his unique storytelling pizzazz, he recounts his departure into moviemaking, with such slapstick comedies as Take the Money and Run, and revisits his entire 60-year-long and enormously productive career as a writer and director, from his classics Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Hannah and Her Sisters to his most recent films, including Midnight in Paris. Along the way, he discusses his marriages, his romances, and his famous friendships, his jazz playing, and his books and plays. We learn about his demons, his mistakes, his successes, and those he loved, worked with, and learned from in equal measure.

This is a hugely entertaining, deeply honest, rich and brilliant self-portrait of a celebrated artist who is ranked among the greatest filmmakers of our time.

I did not want it to end

Love this book. Woody Allen telling his own story was a treat to hear. From his truly humble beginnings to the pinnacle of fame and ridicule, this memoir is a cut above the rest because of Allen's wit, honesty, candor and insight. Superb.

Best listen in a looong time

Just a joy to listen to, Woody at his funniest still, I can’t believe he’s 80 and so fresh snd funny. The first half a hilarious bio of his growing up and starting out, then a detailed account of the accusations against him — I was convinced of his innocence by it — and finally a run through of each of his movies and casts and foibles. That last part stretched on a little too long, I got bored to be honest, but film buffs will appreciate the background I suppose, and he has been so prolific. I loved it, will listen again in a year when I’ve forgotten it all.

really enjoyed learning about New York

Face it. love him or hate him he is an original. Woody has a way with phrases that capture you in mirth EVEN when he hits so very serious issues. Things about his childhood , his movies, his love life..he goes there. I enjoyed this quirky , not flashy prose....just like him.

This Will Give New Insight into Allen

Always love his films and wondered at the strange circumstance he found himself in. I found his explanations about his relationship with his wife Soon-Yi and the false charges of molestation to be completely believable - as did Yale university and other child care experts. This is a very interesting book and quite funny.

Terrific and heartfelt!

What an amazing and lucky life... its a travesty that his life was smeared with false accusations at a time when it was in vogue...

loved hearing from his own voice!

A Woody Allen Story

Rumor has it Scorcese signed to direct. Apologetic, elegiac, anachronistic, darkly humorous, self-deprecating, definitely Woody.

A great read. Highly recommended.

This was a great book. It was full of great anecdotes and details about his life, from his childhood to the present. Disregard the reviews seeking to slander Allen and convict him with no evidence of an allegation that has been thoroughly investigated by professionals and dismissed as fraudulent. Highly recommended.

I loved this book, what an iconic personality

So much more important than it may appear at first, and slowly takes you to his world. He remembers everything in insane detail and of course it is so funny. Very personal, honest and heart-warming. When we look back in later years, hopefully with a clearer perspective, this book will take on a whole new meaning.
