About this listen

The aphorism, "As a man thinketh in his heart so is he," not only embraces the whole of a man's being but is so comprehensive as to reach out to every condition and circumstance of his life. A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts. As the plant springs from, and could not be without, the seed, so every act of a man springs from the hidden seeds of thought and could not have appeared without them. This applies equally to those acts called "spontaneous" and "unpremeditated" as to those which are deliberately executed. Act is the blossom of thought, and joy and suffering are its fruits; thus does a man garner in the sweet and bitter fruitage of his own husbandry.

There’s a version with a better narrator

I bought this version on accident. The narration and recording quality are very rough with multiple audio glitches

Content is still amazing, but not the best way to experience this book

As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he

James Allen's 'As a Man Thinketh' is a self-help book from the very early 20th century. With a title coming from the Bible's Book of Proverbs, it's main premise follows that - the way you think is how you will lead your body. A bit of mind over matter, but more around transforming your circumstances through positive thought. If you are positive doesn't mean good things will happen to you, but that you will be able to get through the bad more easily due to your positive attitude.

The book is about taking charge of your thoughts and using them to guide your body. Rather than letting your emotions or physical ailments etc guide your thoughts. When bad things happen Allen states that 'circumstance does not make the man, it reveals him to himself'. Who you are is already there, it's just bad events bring the person to the fore.

Allen says 'A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.' and the book is about improving your character.

His writings is the basis for many many more recent self help books.

A quick read with some good advice and information. Not all is stuff I agree with, but it is interesting nonetheless.

Narration by Kent Dixon is good. Well paced and clear, he fits the text well. Nothing outstanding, but there isn't much to the text to allow that. I would listen to more items by him given the chance.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher.

You are the Captain of Your Soul

What did you love best about As a Man Thinketh?

I loved this book! Its message is so straightforward, so concise-and I believe-so accurate. The concepts contained in this book are simple and easy to understand, and they offer us a roadmap for becoming a happy, healthy and prosperous being.

This is the gist of the message: our thoughts drive our behavior, our behavior drive our circumstances, and our circumstances determine the level of our success (or failure) when it comes to our happiness, health and prosperity.

My favorite quote: "Good thoughts and actions can never produce bad results. Bad thoughts and actions can never produce bad results. That is but saying that nothing can come from corn but corn; nothing from nettles, but nettles. Men understand this law in the natural world and work with it, but few understand it in the mental and moral world-though its operation there is just as simple and undeviating. And they therefore do not cooperate with it. Suffering is always the effect of wrong thought in some direction. It is an indication that the individual is out of harmony with himself and the law of his being."

This is a audiobook that I will listen to again and again. In fact, I already listened to it a few additional times at a slower speed, so I could more fully absorb the points that were presented!

Any additional comments?

Top 5 All-Time For Sure

The book goes deep and amazing that it was
written in 1909. The principles are timeless.
