About this listen

On a mountain somewhere above treeline, in some of the coldest and worst winter conditions imaginable, two men lie unconscious in the snow as explosive winds batter the nearby summits.

In The Last Traverse: Tragedy and Resilience in the Winter Whites, Ty Gagne masterfully lays out the events that led up to an epic and legendary rescue attempt in severe and dangerous winter conditions in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. More than a cautionary tale, it is a tribute to all the volunteers and professionals who willingly put themselves in harm's way to save lives. This is a must-listen for anyone who hikes the Whites.

Incredible story of rescue and survival

I loved the detail, the timeline and the deep explanation of how such an incredible chain of events happened. I was right there with them in the cold.

Anatomy of a Rescue

Ever conscious of the passage of critical seconds, I felt I was not just hearing, but living all of the moving parts of an impossible search and rescue for two young men in the formidable winter weather and daunting terrain of the Whites. Fascinating, beginning to end, Human and compelling. A brilliant expose about leadership and responsibility at it’s finest.

Fantastic story of Franconia Rigse

This is an excellent story of team work and survival. The book is gripping from start to finish. It means so much more to me as I have done this Hike and met one of the National Guard members on my hike. My utmost respect for all the men and women who participated in saving James Osborn. Our country works better together than apart. God bless all our first responders.

Felt like I was on that mountain.

Wonderful account of a tragic event. The amount and level of the details made it not only interesting, but very educational. Enjoyed it so much that I immediately moved on to the author’s second book.
