Publisher's summary

First in the new Assassins of Landria series from the award-winning, best-selling author of Scourge: A Novel of Darkhurst, and the Chronicles of the Necromancer books!

Friends since their orphanage childhood, Joel “Ridge” Breckinridge and Garrett “Rett” Kennard rose through the ranks of the Landrian army together, from teenaged conscripts to seasoned fighters. Together, they became the most feared team of assassins in Landria, surviving longer that most in their profession by virtue of excellent fighting skills, legendary bravado, peerless strategy, and an uncanny synchronicity. Henri, their long-suffering squire, tends to the thankless jobs of provisioning and logistics, while Ridge and Rett fight and recover.

When wandering mystic Yefim Makary becomes the darling of disenchanted aristocrats, Rett and Ridge fear Makary - or the Witch Lord, as his followers call him - is a threat to the crown. As treasonous whispers spread, Ridge and Rett go rogue to stop the threat, save the kingdom, and protect the king - while landing on the “Most Wanted” list themselves!

Assassins and action

Welcome to the world of Rett and Ridge. Two assassin who work together, unlike many others. There is speculation that their partnership is what keeps them sane, unlike most assassins who work alone. Rett and Ridge met as kids in an orphanage and became brothers. They are dedicated to each other and their king. Think three musketeers. Only in this story there are two who do the fighting and their assistant, Henri, who takes care of all their none-fighting needs and does their espionage. There is swashbuckling, saving kids, and becoming fugitives to save the king. There are good jokes and snappy dialogue. There are ghost and magic at a time when those things are not viewed as good. If you can do magic, then something is wrong with you. I found this engrossing and very entertaining.

Enjoyed this one more than I expected

I came across this book while looking for a new fantasy story and decided to give it a try. To my surprise I actually ended up rewinding it to the beginning after I finished the first chapter so I could get a more solid picture of the main characters and background. They were orphans who met as children and became close friends, staying together through military service and then as assassins and investigators for the king. I appreciate that while they were able to thwart the initial plans of their enemies, it was a challenge for them and there is clearly more to come. Their camaraderie and banter were fun, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing where this series will take them. Onward to book two!
