Publisher's summary

A ranger’s duty. The rotten heart of a king. Rebellion spilled from the blood of family.

Rew, the King’s Ranger, accepted a role on the far edge of the realm to avoid the morass of intrigue and betrayal that bleeds from the heart of the kingdom. His only desire is to shoulder the burden he’s taken, to protect the village of Eastwatch, and to monitor the wilderness beyond.

When three youths are arrested for petty theft in the village and beg for his help, Rew’s oldest friend insists he take responsibility for them. By ties stronger than steel, Rew is forced onto a path he knows leads to chaos and death. Through a resurgence of monsters summoned in ages prior, war between the royal line, and backstabbing treachery, the King’s Ranger will battle to grant the youths a life he never had a chance of.

But as they venture farther from the wilderness he calls home, Rew can feel the magical pull at the center of the kingdom, demanding he return to face his past and his family’s terrible legacy. Only he knows the secret of the king, and the risk it poses to the entire realm.

The King’s Ranger is a classic fantasy adventure, perfect for fans of Michael J Sullivan, Brent Weeks, James Islington, and AC Cobble’s Benjamin Ashwood Series.

Enjoyable, fun twist

Excellent story, like the different narrator, voices, looking forward to reading the rest and I hope a suspenseful ending.

Predictable, yet amicable characters and held my interest.

Predictable but amicable characters held my interest. I doubt it will warrant a second read any time this decade, but I am looking forward to book 4 and I’ll likely explore more of Cobble’s writing. Simon Vance never disappoints!

Slow buy in, but worth it.

Hard to buy into the whole plot at times, or at
least the rationale of the characters to do what they do. Yet, over time, I was sucked in and enjoyed the teasing mystery and twists in this series.

Wow!

I can’t believe how much I loved these books! I hadn’t read anything by AC Cobble prior to listening to them but I will definitely be looking into more of his work! This story is fast paced with some wonderful world building and characters that you will love instantly!
Simon Vance is one of my absolute FAVORITE narrators and as usual he didn’t disappoint!

Too much travel

The three book series has entirely too much walking and the hidden plot is maddening. I think the series could have been so much better. Really nice potential.

Extremely Pleasant

This was a hidden gem for me. I first thought the characters were a little bland but I was quickly corrected. I enjoy the series and I bought extra credit to get the rest!

Lies, Deceit, Leverage and Larceny

This is an epic fantasy that really draws the reader into the book. I couldn’t put it down. Great work of art.

Stupidity isn't a plot device

Why do so many authors choose to set up their storylines by having a main character do something so incredibly (and I mean that literally, as in "not credibly") stupid and/or cowardly that you (or at least I) lose all respect for the character?
I enjoyed the 1st couple hours, even though the "nobleman hiding from and reluctant ro accept his responsibility" trope is generally painful, but back to back massively bad decisions that led directly to all future conflict was more than I could handle.
My theory of "if Simon Vance chose to narrate it, it's probably worth listening to" has been after 2 consecutive series with the same fatal flaw.
I'll forgive one epically bad decision if it is quickly followed by the realization that it was a bad decision followed by the determination to avoid similar errors in the future, but if an author needs 𝘵𝘸𝘰 of them within 5 minutes in order to advance the storyline then I believe they need to re-evaluate that storyline.
I know some people enjoy flawed protagonists. If they're consistently flawed in the same way, I can find them interesting too, but if they demonstrate flaws that don't otherwise match their character it takes me out of the story, and to me, that's a cardinal sin of fiction.
