Publisher's summary

On doctor's orders, Bertie Wooster retires to the village of Maiden Eggesford, but his rest-cure is interrupted by Aunt Dahlia, who wants him to nobble a racehorse; Vanessa Cook, who wants him to act as go-between for her and Orlo Porter; and Orlo Porter himself, who would tear Bertie limb from limb if he ever discovered that Bertie and Vanessa were once engaged. Throw in a dotty explorer, an unreliable poacher, an irascible father, and the stable cat, and the stage is set for a sublime farce.

Critic reviews

"Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in." (Evelyn Waugh)
"He exhausts superlatives." (Stephen Fry)

DAVID DAVIES AT HIS BEST

David Davies performance in this story makes it hard to stop listening too. The way he captures every character is unbelievable. He makes this story so much better than it already is. His performance makes me feel as if I was at a playhouse listening to a whole cast perform it left me wanting more. BREATHTAKING!

Wodehouse at his best with a beautiful execution.

Would you listen to Aunts Aren't Gentlemen again? Why?

I definitely will listen again. I really enjoyed the reading, and laughed through most of it. Humor, charm, and absurdity is a fantastic mix when masterfully written and executed.
Highly recommended.

Which character – as performed by David Ian Davies – was your favorite?

I loved Bertie Wooster. Wodehouse is no exception when it comes to the boundaries of absurdity, but Davies masterfully walks that high wire. I also have the classic, "Tell Tale Heart" in my library. David Davies talent shines through on this as well. His tone and inflections paint a vivid picture in the mind's eye. I'm a big fan.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Absolutely. I actually did. It was a great companion in a long drive. I'm preparing to order the previous Wodehouse book.

That's Why I Don't Like Cats

This hilarious romp in the countryside is made all the better by the outstanding contrast of voices employed by David Ian Davies! Rather tremendous, I should think....

A recording disaster

The Narrator was terrible--kept repeating phrases and sentences, sometimes three times. He also couldn't seem to read a sentence with the emphasis in the right places. He kept chopping the sentences up into rhythmically similar chunks that paid no attention to the meaning. On top of this, I think the recording was off--maybe some of the repetitions were technical--it was hard to tell--but there were many obvious glitches.

I love the work of P. G. Wodehouse, but this reading totally killed his style. Painful to listen to. Am returning it.

No editing

This recording has not been edited. There are many repeated lines which is very annoying.

Bad recording

Horrible recording. Halfway through the narration started repeating, like they did not edit the edits. You could even hear the guy clear his throat.

Needs editing.

The recording isn’t edited at all. All the reader’s takes are included: so you can hear him clear his throat, repeat and correct himself often, and mumble the text to himself as he tries to get it right.
