About this listen

When Autobiography of a Yogi first appeared in 1946, it was acclaimed as a landmark work in its field. The New York Times hailed it as "a rare account". Newsweek pronounced it "fascinating". The San Francisco Chronicle declared, "Yogananda presents a convincing case for yoga, and those who 'came to scoff' may remain 'to pray." Today it is still one of the most widely read and respected books ever published on the wisdom of the East.

This audio edition, featuring Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley's masterful narration, contains the complete text of Paramahansa Yogananda's life story, an absorbing account of a singular search for Truth. Yogananda describes his experiences with modern-day saints and illuminated masters of India, and presents a definitive introduction to the whole science and philosophy of Yoga.

A must read for anyone who is interested in spiritual teachings and religion of the east. Entertaining story of Paramahansa Yogananda's life with his guru and teaching of Kriya Yoga. If you are inspired by the teachings of Wayne Dyer and Deepak Chopra, you will be very interested in this book. I am now inspired to go to the Self Realization Fellowship in NYC and be initiated in Kriya Yoga myself.

This is a treasure of a book - beautifully written and wonderfully read. The insights and spiritual teachings are deep and timeless. I felt bereaved of a good friend when the book ended and will definetly listen to it again.

Great story rooted in the brilliant realities of a world most people cannot imagine. Most interesting are the abilities of the great yogis. The story is just a carrier for the magic of exceptional human abilities.

Fascinating tome!

There are so many types of yoga available. And like most everything, there appear to be so many false/fake gurus. Swami Yogananda is the real deal. I believe many if not most gurus venturing West have borrowed/plagiarized from this book. But, let us leave the negative. Swami Yogananda is on a mission to show yoga and its spiritual tenets to not be in conflict with Western Religion, particularly Christianity. The swami is so direct, self-effacing, and so honest. Countless yogic secrets are revealed. For example, the human spine is the "tree of life" filled with power. Additionally, in activating the human nervous system, miracles become possible. But the Great Miracle is the reality of God, and His Personal Bliss. The swami introduces us to a number of famous saints, such as the one he calls Babaji, who beckoned Swami Yogananda to go East -- because he felt good souls unnecessarily crying for God. From the incorruptible body, to levitation, to the error in Hindu astrology (Kali Yuga is over), to the error in the Hindu caste system (there are two castes, those who seek God and goodness; and those who do not); the word "epiphany" does not do this work justice. On a scale of 5 stars, it is 10!

Enjoyed the book overall. First quarter of the book is slow and did not know what to expect, but slowly got my attention and could not stop listening to it. Definitely worth while.
