About this listen

Fathered by an incubus, raised by a mortal mother, and liaison to the Pemkowet Police Department, Daisy Johanssen pulled the community together after a summer tragedy befell the resort town she calls home. Things are back to normal - as normal as it gets for a town famous for its supernatural tourism, and presided over by the reclusive Norse goddess Hel.

Not only has Daisy now gained respect as Hel’s enforcer, she’s dating Sinclair Palmer, a nice, seemingly normal human guy. Not too shabby for the daughter of a demon. Unfortunately, Sinclair has a secret. And it’s a big one.

He’s descended from Obeah sorcerers and they want him back. If he doesn’t return to Jamaica to take up his rightful role in the family, they’ll unleash spirit magic that could have dire consequences for the town. It’s Daisy’s job to stop it, and she’s going to need a lot of help. But time is running out, the dead are growing restless, and one mistake could cost Daisy everything…

I love this author!

I just haven't come across a book by Jacqueline Carey that I didn't like. This series is excellent and I loved this book. It helped immensely that Johanna Parker is one of my favorite narrators. There's nothing profound about the story; its just a good entertaining read. The characters are well realized and the narrator does a great job bringing them to life. I hope to see more for this series. Who would have thought Ghouls could be so interesting!

Too much meandering

This book covers the back story and rounds out the cast of characters. The mystery was not as engaging as the first book. I still like this author and this heroine so I’m going to read the next one.

Better and better.

Now I gave the last book, Dark Currents, what looks like the same rating, but I'd say this one was better than the last, inching towards 4.5/5 stars. Dark Currents was a solid 4/5 stars, well worth a listen. The story was what improved in my opinion, though perhaps there were sequences that were a bit drawn out, and those that were a bit short. So. Still, my enjoyment of Autumn Bones was greater. Now I'm going to listen to the 3rd book.....

A Great Sookie Stackhouse Replacement

This series reminds me a whole lot of the Sookie Stackhouse books, and the fact that it's narrated by Johanna Parker (narrator for the Sookie series) made the similarity even more pronounced. That could be a criticism in that maybe it's a little too related, or maybe a little too stereotypical of the genre, but I really liked it. I would say that it's also better writing, but I feel like it's harder to judge that in audio. Of Jacqueline Carey's other books, I've only read Kusheil's Dart (and loved it), but if I hadn't known I wouldn't have guessed that they were written by the same person. This series is a lot lighter in tone, and so far, a lot less sexy. Both Dark Currents and Autumn Bones were really fun listens, and I'm looking forward to continuing the series when the next book is released.

Really Good

What I liked most about this book is that it didn't just focus on the paranormal problem. Carey spent a lot of time developing the characters and their relationship with the world she created. I really enjoyed this story and can't wait to see what happens next.

Faulty Recording

Would you try another book from Jacqueline Carey and/or Johanna Parker?

I love Jacqueline Carey and this series, but this audio book was extremely disappointing. It consistently skipped and had gaps. Sometimes it would resume where it left off, and sometimes is skipped chunks of the story. I have never had this problem with one of these audio books, but if I have it again, I'll definitely reconsider my membership.
