About this listen
"Jacqueline Carey's writing flows so beautifully that her stories beg to be experienced on audio...Listeners looking for something different will appreciate this unconventional stand-alone." (AudioFile Magazine)
Jacqueline Carey is back with an amazing adventure not seen since her New York Times best-selling Kushiel's Legacy series. Lush and sensual, Starless introduces listeners to an epic world where exiled gods live among humans, and a hero whose journey will resonate long after the last chapter concludes.
I was nine years old the first time I tried to kill a man....
Destined from birth to serve as protector of the princess Zariya, Khai is trained in the arts of killing and stealth by a warrior sect in the deep desert; yet there is one profound truth that has been withheld from him. In the court of the Sun-Blessed, Khai must learn to navigate deadly intrigue and his own conflicted identity…but in the far reaches of the western seas, the dark god Miasmus is rising, intent on nothing less than wholesale destruction. If Khai is to keep his soul's twin, Zariya, alive, their only hope lies with an unlikely crew of prophecy-seekers on a journey that will take them farther beneath the starless skies than anyone can imagine.

Story
Once, the Seven Shapers dwelled in accord. First-born among them was Haomane, Lord-of-Thought and with his brother and sister gods, the Seven drew upon of the power of the Souma, claimed a race of beings for their own and began shaping the world to their will. But Haomane saw the ways of this new world and was displeased. For in his younger brother Satoris, once called the Sower, Haomane thought too prideful and in his gift, the quickening of the flesh too freely to the races...and to that of Man in particular.

Great story!
Loved this story and narrator! Started a little slow but necessary for character development and then the last half of the book is action packed and engaging! Another great read from this author

fun fantasy adventure with a Trans protagonist
I love JC's work, and this was a fun read. the main char is trans and struggles with gender dysphoria but finds their way in the world. I love the concept of God's living among mortals and the world is populated by lots of interesting chars and species. a definite worth while read

A new, and completely riveting world from Jaqueline Carey's rich imagination!.
I slipped effortlessly into this world as if it were always there waiting for me. Following Kai through lessons in wisdom and skill, the story winds in and through many scenarios of political and philosophical intrigue as well as the questionable benefits of divine interference and prophacy. This is definitely one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling books I have read. Not surprised it came from the talented mind of Jaqueline Carey.

amazing stand alone novel by Jacqueline Carey
I love the way Carey brings worlds and characters to life! Here you have a very romance-mild (YA level) adventure and coming of age story set in a world where the gods have fallen to earth to bless thier lands and peoples.

Some sound issues in the last hours
Wonderfully written, as I have come to expect from Carey. Story was vast and epic, narrator did a pretty good job. Sound fluctuates in the last several hours between very quiet and very loud.

Narrator made it hard to finish
I was excited about this new story from one of my favorite authors. The story was amazing, but the narrator made it hard to listen to. Stilted, jerky speech (sounded like she was reading it badly) and her accents were really bad. The voice of the princess was not good at all. Some voices were okay, but the manner of the performance was hard to listen to.

A good fantasy
Not Carey's best but still good. As always the world felt immersive and fleshed out. However, the actual adventure seemed rushed and almost short compared to her previous novels. I enjoyed it but unlike her Legacy series which I felt like I couldnt put down all the way to the 9th book, this one didnt quite grip me as hard.
