Great Russian Historic Romance

Great Russian Historic Romance. #2 of 4, A romantic historic tale, set in 17th century Russia. Character and history rich. Could use a bit more visual description to make this period live for the reader/listener. While not the primary purpose of this book, this is a fun read that helps provide perspective to the centuries of Russian Muslim conflict that gives us the current war in Ukraine. Recommend reading in order, but would work as stand alone.

meh

A bit dry and the story dragged. I struggled to listen and my Interest lagged. I listened at top volume and still felt like I was listening from a distance. Would have liked it more if it weren't so low volume, especially with the accent. Hard to discern. I made a poor choice with this. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest. The narrator was okay.

A new life filled with challenges

Book two of the Summer Palace Series is far removed from the stifling environment of book one. Our protagonists start a new life in Poland, where Wiley finds himself going off to war to fight for his new king while Katia makes the best of it, bearing children in his absence and holding their extended family together. Because this novel starts fourteen years later, we the reader have a bit of catching-up to do. But then again, so do the characters. Katia’s brother Pavel discovers he is a father, though his beloved Willow has made a new life in his absence, thinking him dead. Nonetheless, all these characters with so much emotional baggage find a way to bond together and present a united front to this hostile world. More often than not, ruthless slave-traders rove about the countryside, abducting children and adults alike, and some of the most vulnerable members of the family are their victims. Fortunately, our Ukranians are a tough bunch and the villains have no idea what they are up against. The hazards of this new life give everyday existence a new meaning, and when our characters do try to reunite with their aristocratic family, their differences are unbridgeable.

This sequel did not disappoint ❤️

The Summer Palace ended with Katia and Wiley riding off into the proverbial sunset, towards building their life together in a place far away from the place that did not accept their love. Autumn Shelter begins 13 years later in Lvov, Poland. oI was so excited to read about their happily ever after... and the book did not disappoint.

Lvov at that time in history was not an easy place to live in. There were wars being waged; and constant threats from raiders, who made off with women and children to sell as slaves... And the Breuder family gave their all for their adopted country and home...

Katia's and Wiley's family now included their children Blanche and Mitia, Willow and her son - Paul, and Hans... The story also brings us up to date with the lives of Pavel, the Rolfs, and even the Ulenkas.

I can only imagine the hardships faced in those times, with no means of quick communication, and not being able to meet family and loved ones for years, even decades; living as I do in times when I can pick up a mobile and video call the other side of earth in seconds...

I can't wait to continue reading the saga of this family in Brumal Castle.

A great sequel to the Summer Palace

Book 2 in the Summer Palace series continues the story of Katia and Wiley fourteen years later in Poland. They have moved from the joys of young love to the more serious adult world that finds Katia bearing Wiley’s children while he is off to war. This audiobook provides an excellent description of life and culture in 17th century Poland.
