About this listen

In 1899 two women from very different backgrounds are about to embark on a journey together - one that will take them from the Old World to the New, from the 19th century into the 20th, and from the comfort and familiarity of England to the rigors of Western Canada, where challenges await at every turn.

The journey begins simply for Kicker Stuart when she leaves her home village to take employment as hostler and farrier at Grindleshire Academy for Young Ladies. But when Kicker falls in love with a teacher, Madelyn Bristow, it radically alters the course of her tranquil life.

Together, the lovers flee the brutality of Madelyn's father and the prejudices of upper crust England in search of freedom to live, and love, as they choose. A journey as much of the heart and soul as of the body, it will find the lovers struggling against the expectations of gender, the oppression of class, and even, at times, each other.

What they find at the end of their journey is not a new Eden, but a land of hope and opportunity that offers them the chance to live out their most cherished dream - a life together.

Contains mature themes.

Caught me off guard how much I enjoyed this

Kickers Journey caught me off guard. I downloaded it on a whim. It sounded interesting enough and it’s Sapphic, so I figured why not.
But whoa. It didn’t take me long to be sucked into the building love between Kicker and Maddie. The rich girl meets the lower class girl and falls head over heels. It’s a tale we all know but I really enjoyed how this one was portrayed. Though wealth was evident, it wasn’t all encompassing. It was sort of background for the most part. There but in shadows. As for Kicker, I really enjoyed her growth as a character. It’s fairly obvious in the first half, she’s absolutely small town sheltered but as their story progresses, she really figures things out for herself and begins to really live. I loved it.
This was excellent. The narrator was excellent as well. Each character is so distinct, you’re never confused. Would definitely recommend!!

Outstanding

I so enjoyed and related to this story of a butch and femme in the later 1800's trials and tribulations. Finding their place in the world. Survival, and love in a male dominated society.

Beautiful!

What a wonderful story of the epic journey of two young gay women in the latter 19th century. They courageously begin a journey from their birthplace of England to the unknown world of Canada, where they hope to settle in a life where they can be together.
I was swept up into the story and couldn't stop listening; it was so well put together, plus, the narrator did an outstanding job! I wished the book did not have to come to an end - it was a beautiful story!

Beautiful story, beautifully narrated.

I have to say right off that the narration was superb! The characters were so fully fleshed, the language lovely. The visual imagery and depth of emotions had me alternating between laughter and shedding tears of anguish and joy. Well done.

17 Hours Of Listener Pleasure.

17 hrs is a long time I know, but at the end you won't find yourself saying, "well sh*t there's 17 hrs I won't get back"!
We can only dare imagine what life was like for any human not conforming to the demands of the hetero society in the18 to 19 hundreds. I am not here for that sour discussion, only to delight that Lois Cloarec Hart managed to make it work for our MC's. From two vastly different worlds their journey of discovery leads them to escape to a home they could "fit in". Absolutely entertaining from start to finish. They should make a movie with this one..

Wonderful story

I was so invested in this story beginning in the late 1800 s in England that I started before I went to sleep and listened the entire next day.
The narration was great. The romance between the 2 MCs seemed so unlikely but as the they began their life in newly developing Canada the relationship became more believable.

It’s good you won’t regret the credit.
