Publisher's summary

Toby never meant to be a highway robber, but needs must. He didn’t plan to impersonate a top London valet either, but when the chance comes to present himself as the earl of Arvon’s new gentleman's gentleman, he grabs it. Unfortunately, the earl is the man he seduced and robbed on the road to get here. Oops.

Miles, Lord Arvon, is not impressed. But he’s faced with a tumbledown home and lost family fortune, and desperate times call for desperate measures. Toby—shameless, practical, and definitely desperate—may be just the man he needs.

To steal back a priceless bracelet, that is. What else were you thinking?

KJ Charles does it again!

I don’t listen to a lot of audiobooks but I’ve been waiting to get my hands on this ever since the author mentioned it. This was a fast and entertaining read with awesome performances by both narrators. I loved Miles and Toby’s not-so-meet-cute. It was plenty sexy and it was clear they had an instant connection. They definitely don’t hit it off on the same foot the second time around, after Toby made an ass of Miles, but I loved watching them develop a tentative friendship before giving in to their attraction and sizzling chemistry! They both had tenuous relationships with their families, particularly their fathers, and their histories helped them form a bond that made each other feel seen. My heart hurt for both of them but especially Miles who sorely regretted the actions of his youth and only wanted his father’s acceptance and forgiveness. There were some really sweet and touching moments between Miles and Toby that not only had me grinning but had my heart melting! This was such a short read and I wouldn’t be mad at all if we got more stories of the both of them as they embark on this new adventure and life together. 😍

great short! charming characters, cute scenario

The story moves quickly and delivers on its premise. The Earl and the thief are charming together and have distinct personalities and arcs, which is an impressive accomplishment in such a short story. KJ Charles is so consistently good. Great time.

Adorable

KJ Charles has been my favorite author for some time. This was my first time listening to an audiobook of her work, and it was positively delightful. The romance had me grinning so much my face now hurts, and the plot was fun and cute. The two narrators did a great job.

a very cute romance

surprisingly adorable definitely worth it. I decided to give this a listen because someone else called it the same, And I started listening to this at work and that beginning of the first chapter had me confused on what I was getting myself into but it is well narrated and a story of an unlikely whirlwind romance absolutely beautiful.

Very cute, great narration

Very cute - not one of the author's best, but to be fair, her best is very very good. Manages to have a satisfying love story and interesting characters in a short amount of time, and the plot has just enough to it for the format. I enjoyed it.

this was cute

4 stars - It was really good

Well this was a cute short story! Toby and Miles had a wonderful forced proximity story that I was instantly hooked on. Toby was a sweet man who doesn’t want to be a thief but does it to survive. He was very kind and supportive and just wanted to take care of Mile, which I loved. Miles is a man who is struggling with guilt over his past actions and not being there for his father. He started off gruff and aloof, which made sense because Toby did steal from him, but quickly couldn’t hide his feelings for him. I really loved watching these two fall in love and find comfort in each other's arms. Also, I didn’t expect Miles to do a bit of crime in the end but I liked it. I want more stories with these two now.

Trigger Warnings: death of father; grief; gambling addiction discussed; alcoholic and abusive father discussed; threat of hanging;

Fun story, uneven narration

I enjoyed the story a lot and thought the characters and relationship were as developed as one could possibly hope for in such a short piece. The dramatic twists at the end both felt earned and satisfying. This takes place in the same universe as “The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting,” which focuses on Toby’s siblings. That backstory is not at all necessary for the plot, but it did add a little extra pathos to Toby’s story.

James Joseph was an excellent reader but Ryan Laughton was, I’m sad to say, really stiff and unnatural. His performance really took away from the Toby POVs and it was hard to stay in the story during those chapters. It was a shame.

Perfect narration

The narrators were spot-on. They really brought the characters to life, and I couldn’t get enough. I was genuinely sad that the story ended! The characters were developed very quickly and easily likeable. A delightful read!
