About this listen

A deadly coup within the Wizard's Guild leaves the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia, gravely injured, and his ward Ciri missing in the third novel of Andrzej Sapkowski's groundbreaking epic fantasy series that inspired the hit Netflix show and the blockbuster video games.

The Wizards Guild has been shattered by a coup, an uprising that has left Geralt seriously injured.

The Witcher is supposed to be a guardian of the innocent, a protector of those in need, a defender against powerful and dangerous monsters that prey on men in dark times. But now that dark times have fallen upon the world, Geralt is helpless until he has recovered.

While war rages across the lands, the future of magic is under threat and those sorcerers who survive are determined to protect it. It's an impossible situation in which to find one girl - Ciri, the heiress to the throne of Cintra - until a rumor places her in the Niflgaard court, preparing to marry the Emperor.

Injured or not, Geralt has a rescue mission on his hands.

Critic reviews

"The character interplay is complex, unsentimental and anchored in brutal shared history. All bodes well for twisty plotting to come." ( SFX)
"Sapkowski revitalizes the genre with energetic and compelling writing. A breath of fresh air in a well-worn genre. Don't miss it!" ( Dreamwatch)
"Like Mieville and Gaiman, Sapkowski takes the old and makes it new." ( Foundation)

Story was great. However, author needs to pronounce Dandelion correctly. Like the flower. not Dan-dill-Eon.

great story

This and Tower of Swallows are incredible books. Didn't enjoy the others quite as much. Performance is great in all of them - Peter Kenny does a really outstanding job.

Not intending to, Geralt finds himself in a group of unlikely heroes off to find Ciri. Meanwhile, Yennifer finds herself also aligned with unlikely allies. Ciri is perfecting her swordsmanship as she becomes one of the 'most wanted'.
The war wages on, with Geralt trying to avoid taking sides, but destiny is also at work.
As with the previous installments, Peter Kenny does a wonderful job bringing all the characters come to life.

Comrades are formed

It's a very interesting series. The reader gives people distinct voices but some get a bit silly. I'm excited for this to deepen my understanding for when I play the 3rd game.

Kept my attention
