When compiling our list of the best fantasy listening out there, we immediately came up against the age-old question: Is this fantasy or science fiction? The distinction is not as clear as you may think. Dragons, elves, and wizards are definitely fantasy, but what about wizards that also fly space ships? (Looking at you, Star Wars.) For the sake of fantasy purity, the top 100 fantasy listens include the best audio works in all manner of fantasy subgenres.

Better Than The Wheel Of Time and Firefly

To call a series better than Wheel of Time MIGHT seem sacrilegious. However, I found myself glued to the series from the start. I haven't even finished all 7 books, but I have listened to the first 5 and am about to start book 6. As other people have said Ready Player One meets Game of Thrones... I figured I would name drop a couple other awesome titles that you probably are already a fan of, and then say, get The Land: Founding and see if you fall in love with it like myself.

Nick Podehl is a great narrator. My first thought was that this guy sounds like Howard from Big Bang Theory. I actually was convinced that Simon Helberg and Nick Podehl were the same person. I had to google them to make sure it wasn't. And I am glad I was wrong. Nick does an amazing job of giving each character his or her own voice. A lot of narrators don't do both genders well, but he did a fantastic job, and used a wide range of accents and intonations to give each race and individual their own style. I will definitely be listening to more of Nick Podehl on Audible. Along with Michael Kramer and Kate Reading, he is now in my top 3.

The story: as this is my first LitRPG series, I enjoyed how the characters' leveling was integral to the story line but the stats were not obnoxiously interrupting the action all the time. The characters are very relatable. The pop culture references are sprinkled on sparingly and effectively for humor but not so much that the series will seem dated in 5 years. The battle scenes are great, especially as the story progresses (not just in book one), the relationships between Richter and the other villagers are interesting to watch as they unfold, the crafting, enchanting, research, and other game elements are also used to enhance the story, rather than fluff it with filler material. I have not only grown to love the characters, I have grown to love the universe here, and I don't want the story to end. I want there to be more adventures to listen to/read in the Land.

The author said something about writing stuff that he would want to read himself. I think that sentiment nailed it, and also in turn, he figured out how to write what I wanted to read, in the same series. I caught up with a friend recently in another state that I hadn't talked to in over a year. During that conversation I mentioned randomly that I have been listening to The Land and he said "wow yeah it's really good, you are going to love Book 7".

Hope my review helps. If you are on the fence, if you have a few other books in your cart, move them to your Wish List and get this first. You will thank me.

Great book and series

I loved this book! It is the second series I have started in the lit rpg genre. I am now through the first 4 books in this series and it emotionally hurts each time I finish one if the next if not available yet. Nick Podehl does such a wonderful job narrating this book that I have begun looking for other series narrated by him.

I loved every second of the story from start to finish! The story made me fill as if I was playing an RPG every where I listened. One of the best stories I've heard this year.

A whole lot of fun!

A likable cast of characters, a novel premise, and plenty of magic! What could be better:) A solid 4.5 stars; we could use a bit more of the protagonist’s backstory, and some more explanation of motives. But I’m assuming that will be covered in the subsequent books. A great new fantasy series, that I am looking forward to diving into!

*The narration is excellent

Gamers will love this one

Actually, a good story but just not so much for me. Nick does a great job reading it. Somehow, lacked depth and not sure where it was going. Maybe later I will try again.
