About this listen

A deal goes bad...and Van Delano is left to die in the desert. But most folk say he’s been cursed with a double-barreled shotgun of mulishness. So, when his first attempt at bargaining for his kidnapped sister’s freedom lands him with a dead horse, a bullet in his leg, and miles of desert between him and the nearest town, he’s not about to give up.

He’ll fight and claw, cheat and steal, even kill, if he has to. He made his sister a promise, and he’s damn sure gonna keep it.

Doesn’t matter if most folk say she’s dead.

Doesn’t matter if the outlaw queen of the Western Territories is playin’ him.

Doesn’t matter if his new metal leg makes him a wanted man, hunted by both the superstitious and the greedy.

He’s a man out for his own redemption, and the only way to pay that debt is to track down his sister and get her free...no matter the cost.

For fans of The Coilhunter series, Make Me No Grave, and the Red Dead Redemption games, saddle up for this gritty, gun-blazin', gadget-laden re-imagining of the Old West. Buy the audiobook today!

Please note: This series contains adult themes, situations, and language.

Gritty, fun, well-written steampunk western!

I was very excited to see that Roger Clark (of Red Dead Redemption II fame) narrated this book, and I love the idea of steampunk westerns. Being a Red Dead fan and having eclectic tastes, I was blown away by the storytelling, and Roger was the *perfect* narrator for this kind of tale.

Yes, there is cussing, and there is some gore, so fans of traditional westerns may not like this style, but for fans of Red Dead, you're going to love this! The steampunk is light in this book but, based on the story, it sounds like we'll get a lot more of it in Book 2.

The author expertly weaved her words in this tale to paint a tale that enchants the reader (or listener) and makes you want to never hit the pause button or stop reading. I couldn't get enough, and I was spellbound by the descriptions, action, and the unique and colorful characters.

I hope we get more of Charlotte and Seven Knives Sally, and I can't wait to read/listen to Van and Holt's next adventures in Book 2!

You'll love it even if you're not into westerns

I've never been a big fan of this particular genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was extremely well written, perfectly narrated, didn't annoy me with predictable outcomes, and the end mde me wish there were just a few more pages, just a few. Please...

Eagerly awaiting book 2!

Great Writing, Great Performance, Frustrating Tale

Desperation is the theme of this mildly-steampunk western. The characters and setting are vivid and vibrant, with beautiful prose and snappy dialogue (with flavorful turns of phrase). The story is frustrating, which fits well with the theme of desperation. Nothing is ever certain, which creates good tension that keeps the listener interested.

Is there a pay-off? That, too, is uncertain. The story does not end on a cliffhanger, per se, but the protagonist's own Hero's Journey is far from over. It is difficult to judge a story that aint over yet.

If you enjoy flavorful westerns in which Hope and Despair are locked in a bloody struggle, this is the story for you.

Roger Clark delivers a golden performance. He can do no wrong. J.R. Frontera is a literary force to be reckoned with. She has good aim, writing as well as she does. I just hope she's also fast on the draw, and gets her next book out soon.

Van is a very fun character

Very enjoyable story, Van is a fun character to be read to about. Plenty of times I was yelling at the speaker for him to NOT do the things he’s about to do, but I think that just made the story more fun… he’s imperfect

Roger Clark brings this book to life!

I loved it a lot
It was my first introduction to the series and I cannot get enough of it. I'm a huge fan of the Red Dead series and hearing that Roger; the voice of Arthur, was narrating this was enough to bring me in and I'm glad I did. I love the fact that you even though I knew how it was going to end when he went to see 9 Finger Nan I was still upset and didn't want the book to end. I need more and I cannot wait for the book(s) to come out. Also Roger does a damn good job giving each character his/her own distinctive voice.

Great narration, story was mehh

Huge fan of Roger Clark, that's actually why I gave the book a chance. I'm also a fan of westerns and fantasy. The story really isn't to impressing. I feel like a lot was left out of this story only so the next books have something to cling to. I was expecting something more of a 50/50 mix of steam punk and western. This is 90% western with just a hint of steam punk. Minus a few details (won't mention because it's a spoiler). it's pretty cliche.

with that being said. I am a sucker for finishing stories....sooooooo.... I'm gonna end up getting book 2.

Good western

A little slower pace than I would like but interesting twist on western genre. Of course RC Bray is awesome and keeps it moving.
