Publisher's summary

Life doesn't always go according to plan. For ex-CIA Agent Samuel Caulfield, his plans were ripped out from under him after a chance encounter in a firefight.

One deal with a dark goddess later, and he's cast into the trenches of a Victorian world, with clashing empires, Elves, Dwarves, Dragons, and more. Surrounded by death, on the front lines of a war without intelligence, he'll have to rely on his wits, his platoon, and a surprise gift from his goddess.

Will all that he's been given be enough to overcome the plots and machinations of those that oppose him?

Jargon

*I received a free copy in exchange for a honest review*

The pace of the story was very good. A lot of military jargon. Not heavy on the harem. Author made the girls all different, which is good, but would like to see them have a little more individual goals in life besides whatever MC wanted.

Solid first book

This book is a good start in what I hope is a long series.

Really Good Series Beginning

This was a great book from beginning to end. Death is not the end for Sam. Fortunately for him its just the beginning of an amazing adventure. All his knowledge, training and skills must compete with magic and magically races. On top of all that, he's also a champion/pawn of a goddess. The story has great character building and story depth. I'd highly recommend giving the book a chance to anyone who is a fan of the genre.

Melanie Hastings did a phenomenal narration job with this story.

Awesome

Love the military structure movement and jargon. This is one of the best blendings of military and fantasy I have ever read, loved it. Also the performance by Melanie Hastings was amazing.

this was really good the main character is realist

there may be some spoilers so there are a lot of complaints about the main character and The harem aspect so the main character is thrown into this new world with very little information with no magic and has to fight against magic and f****** dragons so yes needs a lot of help the harem aspect is a very slow and gradual thing and I don't think it's too prominent personally but the concept of this book is amazing think world war 1 and 2 in a fantasy setting where magic is still the number one weapon there's also the fighting between the gods and all this other great stuff going on I can't wait for about two

Much better than expected…

Enjoyable!
The ratings for this book is legit.

I would have given it 5-stars, if it were not for so many f-bombs (weren’t needed).

Overall a good story and a nice change of pace.

Enjoy…

An impressive first installment

I absolutely loved this story. The characters were unique. The comedy was gold. The action had me hooked. And the different intertwining plot lines have me wanting more. The VA was absolutely phenomenal! I can’t wait for the next one!

Solid novel, light on the harem

A well built little world, both rich enough and scarce enough in detail to picture. The plot’s fairly straightforward, with a few surprises, but the characters are entertainingly written, if occasionally a little… MC fixated.

story, progression, and the work of a excellent voice.

To be honest I can't nitpick to much about it, the foundation of the story with the mix of magic and fantasy blended into a Psuedo Ww1 style world. I hate the fact I will now have to wait till a sequel comes out.

Great story

With 800 books in my audible library I have heard much. This first book was great with a story and characters. It did not use lack of info or super op characters. The mc is it a bit of a prude and never heard the expression “ when in Rome”
The narration was excellent. Being this authors first book on audible I hope it doesn’t take 18 months for column 2
