About this listen

Bestselling author Jeffrey Archer's Be Careful What You Wish For opens with Harry Clifton and his wife Emma rushing to hospital to learn the fate of their son Sebastian, who has been involved in a fatal car accident. But who died, Sebastian or his best friend Bruno?

When Ross Buchanan is forced to resign as chairman of the Barrington Shipping Company, Emma Clifton wants to replace him. But Don Pedro Martinez intends to install his puppet, the egregious Major Alex Fisher, in order to destroy the Barrington family firm just as the company plans to build its new luxury liner, the MV Buckingham.

Back in London, Harry and Emma's adopted daughter wins a scholarship to the Slade Academy of Art where she falls in love with a fellow student, Clive Bingham, who asks her to marry him. Both families are delighted until Priscilla Bingham, Jessica's future mother-in-law, has a visit from an old friend, Lady Virginia Fenwick, who drops her particular brand of poison into the wedding chalice.

Then, without warning, Cedric Hardcastle, a bluff Yorkshireman who no one has come across before, takes his place on the board of Barringtons. This causes an upheaval that none of them could have anticipated, and will change the lives of every member of the Clifton and Barrington families. Hardcastle's first decision is who to support to become the next chairman of the board: Emma Clifton or Major Alex Fisher? And with that decision, the story takes yet another twist that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Be Careful What You Wish For showcases the master storyteller's talent as never before—when the Clifton and Barrington families march forward into the sixties, in this epic tale of love, revenge, ambition and betrayal.

Critic reviews

“No family saga would be complete without a villain, and this book has a good one, a well-drawn and believable character whose motivations are understandable. This thoroughly engaging old-school, multigenerational saga harks back to the work of Malcolm Macdonald, Belva Plain, and Irwin Shaw.” —Booklist

“Archer knows how to dole out tiny crumbs of suspense right up to the last page, which ends with...a really excellent cliffhanger.” —Washington Post

“The most gripping of the Clifton Chronicles yet. The tension and the build-up are terrific, and kept this reader on the edge of his seat.” —The Observer (UK)

This series should have remained a trilogy.

I started this series with the first because I LOVE Jeffery Archer books. The first installment clearly stated that this would be a trilogy. It seems that he has decided to stretch it out to five(?) books. All the plots twists and cliffhangers worked previously but this one... Hmm. Overall, I liked it, but not as much as the previous installments. In the past books, I was really surprised were things went; the story worked well. This one, I saw exactly where the story was going to end, not too many surprises. I hope the next one comes out sooner and that it is the end of the series.

Never End

Any additional comments?

This sequel has been wonderfully entertaining. I am captured by Archer's easy style. The Clifton's have been an enjoyable journey for me. There are harsh realities in life. Ere the carrot run over by the car. He wasn't killed, but, he will be a vegetable for the rest of his life. With the characters and time frames of the Clifton Chronicles, the relevant persons must ultimately die off. That will be a shame. This is number 4 and I have been captured by all of them.

Should be made into a movie!!!

I just finished this fourth book and had already order the fifth. They are exquisitely written and performed. Easily on par with Downton Abby. They definitely should be made into a movie. I will be very sad for them to end as I have listened straight through.

Cliff hanger

Top marks go to the performer. The voices were excellent and so diverse, from the Argentinian baddy, through the female characters, American, German, Irish and Scottish accents, as well as the various British accents. The listener really knows who is speaking from the well diferenciated voices. Great performance that truly enhanced the experience.
I was disappointed that Harry's mother did not appear much in the third and fourth books.
I find it hard to believe that the special unit watching over the Clifton and Barrington families was comprised of only four men and, since they had a man watching the suspect's cabin, why didn't they go into the cabin once he had crept out and discover the bomb?
So now we are left well and truly hanging!

On to the next in the series....

Can't wait to start the next in the series, I am so invested in this story line and characters, each rich in interest, intrigue and intellect in their own way.
