About this listen
The first full-length narrative biography of Led Zeppelin's John Bonham, considered by many to be one of the greatest drummers in rock history, and a genuine wild man of epic (and sadly fatal) proportions.
Beast: John Bonham and the Rise of Led Zeppelin is the first-ever biography of the iconic John Bonham, considered by many to be one of the greatest (if not the greatest) rock drummer of all time. Bonham first learned to play the drums at the age of five and, despite never taking formal lessons, began drumming for local bands immediately upon graduating from secondary school. By the late 1960s, Bonham was looking for a more solid gig in order to provide his growing family with a more regular income. Meanwhile, following the dissolution of the popular blues rock band The Yardbirds, lead guitarist Jimmy Page sought the company of new bandmates to help him record an album and tour Scandinavia as the New Yardbirds. A few months later, Bonham was recruited to join the band who would eventually become known as Led Zeppelin - and before the year was out, Bonham and his three bandmates would become the richest rock band in the world.
In their first year, Led Zeppelin released two albums and completed four US and four UK concert tours. As their popularity exploded, they moved from ballrooms and smaller clubs to larger auditoriums and eventually started selling out full arenas. Throughout the 1970s, Led Zeppelin reached new heights of commercial and critical success, making them one of the most influential groups of the era, both in musical style and in their approach toward the workings of the entertainment industry. They added extravagant lasers, light shows, and mirror balls to their performances; wore flamboyant and often glittering outfits; traveled in a private jet airliner and rented out entire sections of hotels; and soon become the subject of frequently repeated stories of debauchery and destruction while on tour. In 1977, the group performed what would be their final live appearance in the US, following months of rising fervor and rioting from their fandom. And in September of 1980, Bonham - plagued by alcoholism, anxiety, and the after-effects of years of excess - was found dead by his bandmates.
To this day, Bonham is posthumously described as one of the most important, well-known, and influential drummers in rock, topping best-of lists describing him as an inimitable, all-time great. As Adam Budofsky, managing editor of Modern Drummer, explained, "If the king of rock 'n' roll was Elvis Presley, then the king of rock drumming was certainly John Bonham."

The authorized biography of the most notorious rock manager of all time, Peter Grant, best known for his work with Led Zeppelin. Often acknowledged as the "fifth member of Led Zeppelin", Grant's story has appeared in fragments across countless Zeppelin biographies, but none has explored who this brilliant and intuitive manager yet flawed and sometimes dangerous man truly was. No one has successfully captured the scope of his personality or his long-lasting impact on the music business. Acclaimed author and journalist Mark Blake seeks to rectify that.

Story
With over 70 million records sold, Black Sabbath, dubbed by Rolling Stone “the Beatles of heavy metal,” helped create the genre itself, with their distinctive heavy riffs, tuned down guitars, and apocalyptic lyrics. Bassist and primary lyricist Geezer Butler played a gigantic part in the band’s renown, from suggesting the band name to using his fascination with horror, religion, and the occult to compose the lyrics and build the foundation of heavy metal as we know it. In Into the Void, Butler tells his side of the story.

But now, after 50 years, The Doors’ notoriously quiet guitarist is finally breaking his silence to set the record straight. Set the Night on Fire is packed with never-before-told stories from The Doors’ most vital years, and offers a fresh perspective on the most infamous moments of the band’s career.

No one other than Warren Zanes, rocker and writer and friend, could author a book about Tom Petty that is as honest and evocative of Petty's music and the remarkable rock and roll history he and his band helped to write. Born in Gainesville, Florida, with more than a little hillbilly in his blood, Tom Petty was a Southern shit kicker, a kid without a whole lot of promise. Rock and roll made it otherwise.

People ask me how come I'm still alive, and I don't know what to say. When I was growing up, if you'd have put me up against a wall with the other kids from my street and asked me which one of us was gonna make it to the age of 60, with five kids and four grandkids and houses in Buckinghamshire and California, I wouldn't have put money on me, no f--king way. But here I am: ready to tell my story, in my own words, for the first time. A lot of it ain't gonna be pretty. I've done some bad things in my time. But I ain't the devil.

Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

Story
Born just outside London in 1942, Glyn Johns was 16 years old at the dawn of rock and roll. His big break as a producer came on the Steve Miller Band's debut album, Children of the Future. He went on to engineer or produce iconic albums for the best in the business, including Abbey Road with the Beatles. Even more impressive, Johns was perhaps the only person on a given day in the studio who was entirely sober, and so he is one of the most reliable and clear-eyed insiders to tell these stories today.

It has been three decades since Nirvana upended the pop cultural landscape with Nevermind, the landmark album that became the soundtrack of Generation X, capturing its confusion, frustration, and passion. In 1993, Michael Azerrad published what stands as the definitive biography of this revolutionary band and its star-crossed leader Kurt Cobain. Written with the band’s complete cooperation—the only book to feature interviews with Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl—it became a massive bestseller and, in the words of Cobain, "the best rock book I’ve ever read.”

While it’s easy to get caught up - and, rightfully so - in the art of the Renaissance, you cannot have a full, rounded understanding of just how important these centuries were without digging beneath the surface, without investigating the period in terms of its politics, its spirituality, its philosophies, its economics, and its societies. Do just that with these 48 lectures that consider the European Renaissance from all sides, that disturb traditional understandings, that tip sacred cows, and that enlarges our understanding of how the Renaissance revolutionized the Western world.

When The Levee Breaks!
This is such a great book! Brings an in-depth telling of Bonzo’s life with tons of quotes from family and friends. The stories told about him are just mind blowing. Sharing the life of a family man forced to be on the road “alone”, really puts things in to perspective when it comes to being away from your loved ones!

Amazing journey!
I know and love Led Zeppelin so I decided to read this book. I quickly learned I knew absolutely nothing of any one of the band members.. This was a captivating journey into the life and work of John Bonham, arguably, the greatest drummer of all time. It was an great book amd an easy listen.

Story of uncontrolled excess
I debated about listening to this book, as I was a huge fan of Led Zeppelin and John Bonham, and I had heard about the debauchery that was prevalent. I knew that I would be saddened by much of the book. As a young man, I had tickets to see them twice, but they had to cancel both times.
Needless to say, the book didn't disappoint. Yes, it shows what a good and decent man John was, but, because of his drinking and drug abuse, it really showed what a mean drunk, and out of control addict, is like. Peter Grant didn't do any of the band any favors by not ensuring that he had more control over them, mainly because Grant was as much (or more) out of control than the band was.
I'm saddened by the fact that Mr. Bonham will be remembered for the beast in him, and not the family man that he wanted to be.

In-Depth and Entertaining
As a long time Led Zeppelin fan and student of John Bonham's work, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although this tells the story of Bonham, it also details the story of Led Zeppelin quite well, highlighting the stories behind all of the albums and tours. Being a drummer, I understood all of the "drum-speak" and was able to follow the nerdy descriptions of his technique and drum kits with enthusiasm. However, you don't have to be a drummer to understand the story and what is going on. I recommend this to any Zep fans, and HIGHLY recommend to all of the drummers out there.

Wish I Could Unsee Bonzo’s Life
While this was a detailed telling of Bonham’s life with good information about what made him a drumming god, there was too much detail for my tastes about his boorish, violent behavior. It has tainted my enjoyment of the music. Not the author’s fault of course.

Dave who?
Had to find out who this dave guy is, we old folks don’t really know any crunch grunge bands. Why waste 9 minutes telling people how you feel about Bonzo? Who cares? I bought this ebook for Bonham ! WTH?
