About this listen

Ten-year-old orphan Libète has been hardened by the daily struggle to survive in Cité Soleil, Haiti's most infamous slum. But when she and her best friend, Jak, discover a young mother and her baby brutally murdered in a nearby marsh, it's unlike anything she's encountered before. Though initially shocked, the adults of Cité Soleil move on quickly from the event; after all, death is commonplace in this community. Undaunted, Libète takes action with Jak in tow, plunging herself into a dangerous, far-reaching plot that will change her irrevocably and threaten everything she holds dear.

Because We Are is a profound and mesmerizing tale of a young girl's search for justice in an unjust world, set against the vivid and tumultuous backdrop of modern-day Haiti.

I was very moved by a story set in a country I am not familiar with. The struggles described are foriegn and terrible. It reminded me to look deeper at a situation and not listen to a convenient explanation.

Transporting and informative

I don't know how or why I finished this. It was dreadfully boring at times, intensely sad at others. The narrator is the only thing about this experience that I enjoyed.

Painfully Boring & Sad

On the surface, this story is an interesting mystery with lots of plot twists involving two very young detectives. if the author wanted to open my eyes to the tragedy that is Haiti, he picked the most interesting way to do it. He spins a wonderfu fictional tale that exposes the complexity of life and 'justice' in Haiti.
But the narrator has a part in opening my eyes and heart. She brought the characters to life in a way that made me feel everything they felt. wonderful job to her and I hope to read more of Libete and Jac in the future.
I warn you that the timeline goes back and forth, but makes sense in the context of the story. so ne patient, it's worth it.
Bonus is that proceeds from the book help the Haitian people.

Good story, Great narrator, Greater cause

Initially I had some trouble, not realizing that times were moving back & forth. I assume that the printed book had a break at those points. Once I figured that out, the book was excellent, though I still harbor some confusion about certain parts.

Excellent
