Story
A Honeybee Heart Has Five Openings begins as the author is entering her 30s and feeling disconnected in her life. Uneasy about her future and struggling to settle into her new house in Oxford with its own small garden, she is brought back to a time of accompanying a friend in London - a beekeeper - on his hive visits. And as a gesture of good fortune for her new life, she is given a colony of honeybees. This is a subtle yet urgent mediation on uncertainty and hope, on solitude and friendship, on feelings of restlessness and on home; on how we might better know ourselves.

Susan Knilans and Jacqueline Freeman are in love with bees. So in love that they observe their bees - their work, communication, seasonal activity, and more - for hours each day. And with observation came realization: When bees are allowed to live as they would in nature (with smaller hives, no chemicals, freedom to swarm, and little-to-no human interference), they will thrive. Accordingly, Knilans and Freeman have spent decades perfecting the revolutionary practice of preservation beekeeping, guided by the simple question, "What do the bees want?"

The fruitless fall nearly became a reality when, in 2007, beekeepers watched 30 billion bees mysteriously die. And they continue to disappear. The remaining pollinators, essential to the cultivation of a third of American crops, are now trucked across the country and flown around the world, pushing them ever closer to collapse.

Richard Dawkins' brilliant reformulation of the theory of natural selection has the rare distinction of having provoked as much excitement and interest outside the scientific community as within it. His theories have helped change the whole nature of the study of social biology, and have forced thousands to rethink their beliefs about life.

In one of Phil Mason's many revelations, you'll learn that Communist jets were two minutes away from opening fire on American planes during the Cuban missile crisis, when they had to turn back as they were running out of fuel. You'll discover that before the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield.

I really appreciate everything in laymen’s terms. It was like beekeeping for dummies. And a gentle yet brutally honest journey through the journey of life with bees for someone like me who literally knew nothing about them in the beginning. Now I feel like I could join a beekeeper society and not be entirely lost or intimidated. Thank you so much for the leg up!!

Pretty good basic info
Covers the basics for us new-bees. That being said, some of the bee jokes were just a bit beeyond my preference.
Only true negative critique would be the editing- should have done a better edit, as the reader loudly and audibly clears her throat in the middle of the reading (at least once) and that should have gotten cut out (it’s really distracting and kinda funny that it slipped through the edit)
Overall though, it’s a decent listen with some good material and a few laughs at the expense of poor bee puns and honey-humor.

Great info for beginners
I’m a brand new beekeeper who listened to this book before getting bees and it has given me lots of great tips and things to think about.

Informative and funny to listen to.
I enjoyed the book, I liked the narrator and thought the content was entertaining. Very basic beekeeping knowledge.
