About this listen

Marthe Cohn was a young Jewish woman living just across the German border in France when Hitler rose to power. Her family sheltered Jews fleeing the Nazis, including Jewish children sent away by their terrified parents. But soon her homeland was also under Nazi rule. As the Nazi occupation escalated, Marthe's sister was arrested and sent to Auschwitz and the rest of her family was forced to flee to the south of France.

Always a fighter, Marthe joined the French Army and became a member of the intelligence service of the French First Army. Marthe, using her perfect German accent and blond hair to pose as a young German nurse who was desperately trying to obtain word of a fictional fiancé, would slip behind enemy lines to retrieve inside information about Nazi troop movements.

By traveling throughout the countryside and approaching troops sympathetic to her plight - risking death every time she did so - she learned where they were going next and was able to alert Allied commanders.

Amazing story of a fighter and survivor

I had a pleasure and honor to meet Marthe Cohn, and her story is just so amazing.
During my evening with Marthe she told me she doesn't feel or want to be called a hero, she was just doing what anyone would have done had they been her, and that she was also the luckiest person ever for having survived through many events.
I enjoyed reading this book as it brought me closer to what my own grandparents had suffered but were never able to talk about. A must read for anyone that wants to learn more about WW2.

A bigger than life memoir

I found out about this biography after seeing Marte Cohn speak at a talk she gave in Ashland, Oregon. You could have heard a pin drop. There were at least 300 people in the room and barely anyone moved a muscle as she recounted parts of her life. She and her husband, Major, had brought her numerous awards and medals of honor which were on display. I’m so glad I Purchased a copy of the book. This is truly one of the best books I’ve ever read. By far one of the best biographies I’ve ever read. It boggles the imagination that the author could have had so many close calls, so many high impact moments, and had done so many heroic acts. Marte Cohn is an inspiring, admirable woman Who showed true bravery repeatedly. Thank you for your service Marte.

Standing Ovation

A historic heroic life of a brave woman who put herself out there for the love of people; saving lives, and not just as a nurse. She was a fighter, always finding away, she did what's right not what's easy.

A great book

Entertaining and well written, the story of another brave soul whose spirit couldn’t be stomped out by the Nazis. Where ordinary people might have crumpled from fear this brave Jewish women did great things and was so full of compassion. Her story is worth remembering and retelling.

I am drawn to this period and the narration of events brings a reality to the written word.

Amazing Lady

I had the honor of meeting her in Spokane. Her story of the progression of events that changed her life, her families lives and the lives of the Jewish people shared the heart of a hero facing evil.

Great story but terrible French pronunciation.

This is a beautiful story of a family facing the worst of Nazi Germany with bravery, creativity, and love.

However my enjoyment of the book was continually interrupted by the reader’s terrible French accent. It was worse because you could tell she was trying, but the vowels were all wrong. (Leecee for lycée? Gayr for gare?)

I don’t blame the reader, per se, as she tried. But seriously- can’t the publishing company hire folks who have genuine experience with French, for a book full of French words? Is that truly so hard? If not, can’t you give them a better cheat sheet for pronunciations?
