About this listen

Berlin, 1942. The Gestapo arrest 18-year-old Bert Lewyn and his parents, sending the latter to their deaths and Bert to work in a factory making guns for the Nazi war effort. Miraculously tipped off the morning the Gestapo round up all the Jews who work in the factories, Bert goes underground. He finds shelter sometimes with compassionate civilians, sometimes with people who find his skills useful and sometimes in the cellars of bombed-out buildings. Without proper identity papers, he survives as a hunted Jew in the flames and terror of Nazi Berlin in part by successfully mimicking non-Jews, even masquerading as an SS officer. But the Gestapo are hot on his trail....

Before World War II, 160,000 Jews lived in Berlin. By 1945, only 3,000 remained alive. Bert was one of the few, and his thrilling memoir - from witnessing the famous 1933 book burning to the aftermath of the war in a displaced persons camp - offers an unparalleled depiction of the life of a runaway Jew caught in the heart of the Nazi empire.

I haven't read or listened to many stories of Berlin Jews hiding in Berlin. Uboats as they called themselves. Incredible story of survival. One of the best books I've listened to this year. Also, one of the best narrations.

incredible story

This book is eye opening, the details bring to life the reality of these horrific years. It’s so well written and narrated that you genuinely feel like you are part of the story. The research and accuracy make it undisputed and you will finish in a jumble of tears, a mix of elation for those who survived and deep sadness for all the lives that were lost.

Carefully detailed and organized in a fluid manner which captivates and engages.

This is an excellent and important production. While I have read many books and listened to many audiobook productions about various aspects of World War Il, this stands out since it is a true, first person story. And what a story and journey… I am grateful to the authors for sharing this.

Excellent, Must Listen

During the pandemic, I have probably listened to 50 World War II books, historical fiction, first person reports, etc. For whatever reason I am obsessed with this time in history. This is by far THE BEST of those 50 books I have listened to. This book is nothing short of amazing. I still have nearly 3 hours to go and I am just flabbergasted. I don’t want it to end, but I want to find out how it ends. Listen to this book!!!!

OMG —This book is a MUST listen! Unbelievable!
