About this listen
They say that whoever you are it's okay, you were born that way. Those words don't comfort Emily, because she was born Christopher and her insides know that her outsides are all wrong.
They say that it gets better, be who you are and it'll be fine. For Emily, telling her parents who she really is means a therapist who insists Christopher is normal and Emily is sick. Telling her girlfriend means lectures about how God doesn't make that kind of mistake.
Emily desperately wants high school in her small Minnesota town to get better. She wants to be the woman she knows is inside, but it's not until a substitute therapist and a girl named Natalie come into her life that she believes she has a chance of actually Being Emily.
A story for anyone who has ever felt that the inside and outside don't match and no one else will understand . . .
In this new, expanded version you will find updated language, expanded and additional scenes, a new note from the author, a new introduction, and an epilogue: Emily and Claire, ten years later.
The groundbreaking classic updated for our generation!

Story
Ruby and her sister, Wren, are normal, middle-class Colorado high school students working a summer job at the local Renaissance Fest to supplement their meager college savings. So when an eccentric old lady asks them to impersonate her long-absent grandchildren at a fancy dinner party at the jaw-dropping rate of two grand—each—for a single night… Wren insists it’s a no-brainer. Make some cash, have some fun, do a good deed. But less than an hour into the evening at the mysterious Hegemony Manor, Ruby is sure she must have lost her mind to have agreed to this.

Story
When six childhood friends get together for their annual girl's weekend at the beach in Port Aransas, none could have believed it would be for the very last time. Nina Evans had been saddled with organizing the weekend each year, pulling five of her oldest friends together for a few nights of fun and reminiscing, the one time a year they saw each other. Each year was much the same—laughter, dancing, and lots of drinking. This time was no different. That is, until Jones walked out of the dance club with a stranger.

Story
Fifteen-year-old Layla Freeman likes to pretend her life is fine. After all, her mother is about to celebrate thirty days sober, and yeah, they’ve moved into a homeless shelter, but it’s only temporary, right? Her mom will get better, and in the meantime, it’s important that no one at school finds out where she’s been living for the past month. Layla has worked hard to build her reputation as a girl who doesn’t care what others think of her, but the truth is she does care—deeply—and she’s tripping over her own lies, especially to her best friend, as she tries to pretend nothing’s wrong.

Story
Clara loves rules. Rules are what have kept her and her sister, Molly, alive—or, rather, undead—for over a century. Work their historic movie theater by day. Shift into an owl under the cover of night. Feed on men in secret. And never fall in love. Molly is in love. And she’s tired of keeping her girlfriend, Anat, a secret. If Clara won’t agree to bend their rules a little, then she will bend them herself. Boaz is cursed. He can’t walk two city blocks without being cornered by something undead. At least at work at the theater, he gets to flirt with Clara, wishing she would like him back.

A Quintessential Trans Narrative
Being Emily is the book my younger self needed, and I resonated with it on a deeply personal level even as an adult. As the first YA novel to be written from a trans perspective, it sets the bar incredibly high for later trans novels. While Emily faces challenges all too familiar to trans folk of all ages, the book never feels unnecessarily cruel to the character, and it celebrates the joys of the trans experience rather than solely focusing on the negatives.
I left this book feeling endeared not just to the character of Emily, but also her friends and support system. This story does a great job depicting how partners, friends, and family of trans people can support them early in their journey, and I’d recommend it to anyone that wants to be an ally to the trans community.
I’m so glad this novel received an audio book, and the narration is both fitting and flawless! I hope this makes the novel more accessible to future generations of trans readers that need a book like this at a difficult time in their lives.
