Ben Falcone
About this listen
A funny and intimate look at fatherhood from the actor and writer/director of The Boss and Tammy that combines stories about his own larger-than-life dad and how his experiences raising two daughters with his wife, Melissa McCarthy, are shaped by his own childhood.
Though he's best known for his appearances in the movie Enough Said, as well as his hilarious role as Air Marshall Jon in Bridesmaids, Ben Falcone isn't a big-shot movie star director at home. There, he's just Dad. In this winning collection of stories, Ben shares his funny and poignant adventures as the husband of Melissa McCarthy and the father of their two young daughters. He also shares tales from his own childhood in Southern Illinois and life with his father - an outspoken, brilliant, but unconventional man with a big heart and a somewhat casual approach to employment named Steve Falcone.
Ben is just an ordinary dad who has his share of fights with other parents blocking his view with their expensive electronic devices at school performances. Navigating the complicated role of being the only male in a house full of women, he finds himself growing more and more concerned as he sounds more and more like his dad. While Steve Falcone may not have been the briefcase and gray flannel suit type, he taught Ben priceless lessons about what matters most in life. A supportive, creative, and downright funny dad, Steve made sure his sons' lives were never dull - a sense of adventure that carries through this warm, sometimes hilarious, and poignant memoir.
Foreword read by Melissa McCarthy and featuring the voices of Stephen, Margaret, and Flynn Falcone.

Tom Segura is known for his twisted takes and irreverent comedic voice. But after a few years of crazy tours and churning out podcasts weekly, all while parenting two young children, he desperately needs a second to himself. It’s not that he hates his friends and family — he’s not a monster — he’s just beat, which is why his son’s (ruthless) first full sentence, “I’d like to play alone, please,” has since become his mantra.

Story
Life is never peaceful in Chris Erskine's house, what with the four kids, 300-pound beagle, chronically leaky roof, and long-suffering wife, Posh. And that's exactly the way he likes it, except when he doesn't. Every week in the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune (and now and then in many other papers), Erskine distills, mocks, and makes us laugh at the absurdities of suburban fatherhood. And now, he's gathered the very best of these witty and wise essays - and invited his kids (and maybe even Posh) to annotate them with updated commentary.

Laughed My Ass Off AND Learned Key Life Lessons!
Would you consider the audio edition of Being a Dad Is Weird to be better than the print version?
No but you really get great comedy flavor from the voices! (Note: Mr. Falcone is a comedic actor so as you might imagine his narration is terrifically funny.)
What other book might you compare Being a Dad Is Weird to and why?
There is no other.
Which scene was your favorite?
Let's put it this way, I'm a nature lover but you'll never catch me on Ocracoke Island.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Many, but "Choose Happy, and It Is a Choice" sure goes a long way.
Any additional comments?
An authentic, heartfelt, wise, and extremely hilarious account of Mr. Falcone's upbringing at the hand of his larger-than-life father Steve in the sleepy college town of Carbondale, IL, and his subsequent adventures as a celebrity dad in LA. I'm a big fan of comedy memoirs, but this one had more startlingly odd, insightful, and laugh-out-loud moments than I'd previously read or heard. In learning about Ben's laudable life fueled by the wonderful lessons imparted by his dad, I somehow came to know quite a bit more about what's most important in my own. Highly recommended!
