About this listen

In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children - everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills ("they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news"), to the eating habits of four-year-olds ("there is no difference between a four-year-old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor"). Dad is Fat is sharply observed, explosively funny, and a cry for help from a man who has realized he and his wife are outnumbered in their own home.

Pretty funny riff, primarily on life as a parent. While the pace of jokes is not quite equivalent to stand up, this is a pretty funny book.

for parents, after the first one is born

Dad is fat is a pleasant listen. If you know Gaffigan’s work, you know what to expect. If you don’t like his humor or his voice, don’t bother. If you are unfamiliar with Gaffigan, he is a clean comic and this book is pretty much only about his family. If you don’t find humor in the small parts of family life, don’t bother. I like observational humor about families and the inside out look and this book hit a nice space. Clearly Gaffigan is happy and happy to share with us what’s going on and how crazy a large family is.

Gaffigan’s delivery is (this is not a criticism) flat just like his standup. Maybe it’s a bit nasal or whiny. It works for him (and me.) The book is 5.5 hours long so not too short. It is good for a drive – I could easily listen to a bit on my drive in.

I’m giving it fours because, while it is good and funny and I will buy his other products, it is not to the level of Tina Fey, Nora Ephron, Dan Savage or David Sedaris. I’m looking forward to the books to follow as the kids grow up. Growing up doesn’t sound like it is ever going to be a problem for Gaffigan and I, for one, and pretty happy about that.

I had a great time listening to this book, allowed me to get a great view of what life is like living as Jim Gaffigan. I don't have children myself but it was great warning what it would be like to have so many kids. if you want to good clean laugh this book is definitely what you'll want to get.

So many kids!

If you have listened/watched his comedy specials, you’ve heard all the jokes in this book before. The difference is the delivery is much less engaging that when he is on stage. The content of the book is still great and I still enjoyed it overall but it wasn’t as amazing as it could have been.

Love Gaffigan but...

What did you love best about Dad Is Fat?

humorous insight.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dad Is Fat?

The first story about Jim and Jeannie going on vacation to Grand Canyon with a couple with a baby. How the couple used Jim and Jeannie for their hotel room and were put out when Jim wanted to take a nap. It was fun insight into the world of how other people raise their kids. I sat thinking that couple were a pair of jerks but then at the end you hear that the Gaffigan family has to travel by tour bus and still has to book 2 nights in a hotel for the pool -- you realize that we're all jerks doing everything possible to keep our kids quiet.

Jeannie must be a God

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yeah. I absolutely love Jim Gaffigan. I've listened to all his stand up albums and seen him live a couple times. It was interesting to learn more about his personal life and how he parents. I listened to it on a road trip and it made the time fly. That being said I didn't really laugh that much like I usually do at his jokes. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not a parent or what but it just wasn't doing it for me. I guess I would probably recommend this mostly to parents with small children... they probably would enjoy it more.

What about Jim Gaffigan’s performance did you like?

Everything. The best part about the audio book was Gaffigan's performance. Highly recommend listening to it over reading it.

Pretty Good

Any additional comments?

As a father of 3 this book was very relevant to me. What I loved about it most was how it now lets me take make every frustrating situation regarding raising young children and family life a laughable event. This book gifted me and my wife with a comic outlet for everything! It's nice to be able to laugh together about the hard things in life!

Hilarious!...and surprisingly relevant...
