About this listen

A collection of short stories featuring Sam Hunter, from best-selling author Jonathan Maberry!

Sam Hunter is a bit of an animal. He's a former Twin Cities cop who lost his badge because of excessive force. Abusive husbands, child molesters, and other lowlifes wound up looking like they'd been mauled by a dog...or a wolf.

Now Sam's a low-rent PI in Philadelphia. He takes the kinds of cases no one wants. His clients are usually on the fringes of society. The kind who are prey for all manner of predators - human and otherwise.

When Sam takes on a client, they become part of his pack, and no one protects their own better than a werewolf. At least the kind of werewolf like Sam, who comes from a long, long line of Benandanti - also known as "the hounds of God".

Stories in this collection include "Like Part of the Family", "Toby's Closet", "Crazy Town", "We All Make Sacrifices", and "A House in Need of Children".

This is a fun read - the writing is funny and clever, the narration is exceptional and the stories are interesting but not too deep. A less than successful werewolf detective that takes on supernatural cases. The way Mayberry writes is perfect for the way Porter narrates - makes for a very easy read with some laugh out loud moments interspersed between somewhat suspenseful stories. Worth the credit.

Sam Hunter used to be a police detective, but he got kicked off the force for excessive force. Bad things tended to happen to child molesters and others who preyed on the truly innocent. Their injuries were strange, too--as if they'd gotten mauled by a dog.

Now Sam is a private detective in Philadelphia, and he attracts an interesting clientele with interesting problems. Problems they can't even explain to the police.

Problems better addressed by a werewolf.

Sam is a monster who protects people from other monsters.

This is a collection of five short stories, in which we get to know Sam, his rough around the edges facade, and his strong, humane values. In the process, Sam is also learning more about the weirdness of the world and the monstrous things lurking in it that even a werewolf suspected. The stories cover the sad, the terrifying, and the sweet. There are vampires and Lovecraftian horrors.

Oh, and other werewolves, too.

I would have said that I had no patience for werewolf stories, but I really enjoyed these, and I'd like to read or listen to more of them.

Recommended.

I bought this audiobook.

The only problem with this set of stories is that it was too short absolutely loved the character and the narration!

Wish it was a extended series

Mr. Maberry did such a great job of writing supernatural cases that I would have never thought of. His approach was so unexpected! I'm glad that I gave Sam Hunter a chance because he was a character that I loved to follow. I really hope that he will have more stories in the future!

Supernatural cases unlike what I have read before

The old hard-bitten gumshoe thing, with Werewolves. I am a sucker for these and found my housework enjoyable as each case unfolded.

This monster wears a fedora

The narrator was perfect for this book. With it being a collection of short stories released in increments, listening to them back to back makes them feel a bit repetitive. The last story was my favorite and a real break from the patterns established in the rest.

the simple stories

I was not familiar with this author, but now that I have experienced his writings, I will be looking for more of his literary delights. The narrator was first rate.

Delightfully Delicious

I decided to buy this book after listening to two other short story collections with Sam Hunter. The story lines in this collection of short stories are full of action, monsters, emotion and comedy. I'd love to see a full novel written about Sam Hunter that included more about his family, background and cases.

I'd love a Sam Hunter full novel
