About this listen

John Charming isn't your average prince...

He comes from a line of Charmings - an illustrious family of dragon slayers, witch-finders and killers dating back to before the fall of Rome. Trained by a modern day version of the Knights Templar, monster hunters who have updated their methods from chain mail and crossbows to Kevlar and shotguns, John Charming was one of the best-until a curse made him one of the abominations the Knights were sworn to hunt.

That was a lifetime ago. Now John tends bar under an assumed name in rural Virginia and leads a peaceful, quiet life. That is, until a vampire and a blonde walked into his bar...

Light hearted, funny at times, but serious at times. Urban fantasy, this guy and Dresden would be buds, but it is not a cheap imitation to hold you over. The narrator hit it spot on, very entertaining. There is excellent world building and character development. I wish I had found this author sooner, will definitly be looking for more.

excellence, just the right mix and tone.

What did you love best about Charming?

Charming was a witty character that made for a fun book. The narrator was great except for the odd way he paused when saying ",he said ." Other than that it was a novel approach to the werewolf vampire conflict

What was one of the most memorable moments of Charming?

Charming himself is actually quite charming

Which character – as performed by Roger Wayne – was your favorite?

Charming

Fun read

I took a chance on this and I'm glad I did. Charming did an excellent job of telling the tale of magic and hunting vampires. I really enjoyed the historical references in the story, how the Pax came to be, how the knights have evolved, the different protectors of the Pax. I liked the sarcasm and wit of Charming. Roger Wayne did an enjoyable time bringing Elliot James story to life.

Great twist on Prince Charming

John Charming lives in a world where magickind is protected from humankind by a glamour called the Pax Arcana, and humankind is protected from magickind by a secret order of modern day knights. What a well built world he weaved! This is almost like Burn Notice (the TV show) set in a supernatural world. John Charming has definitely been burned, and yet he is still compelled to make bad guys pay for their crimes....all while he's hiding from the Knights Templar. Narrator OWNED the charm and wit of John.

Gorey, lots of cussing, descriptive make-out scenes, and violent….Definitely a Man-book, but for some reason I just couldn't put it down. Worth the credit.

GOREY AND FUN!!

I love this authors style of writing. I love the humor and how creative he was when explaining why things are the way they are.
If you like werewolf's, vampires and other creatures of the night then you will enjoy this book.
This is absolutely the best narrator I have ever heard. He is great at charging is voice to fit the characters and puts a lot of emotion in his reading.

Love the book and the narrator

I love when I take a risk on a book I wouldn't ordinarily read and really enjoy it. The characters are well developed and realistic. The world building is interesting and unique. I bought the second book as soon as I finished the first.

Great Debut

Both in story telling and narration Charming is as enjoyable, witty, and page turning as Iron Druid. Just when I was mourning the end of a great series I've discovered another.

Similar to Iron Druid Chronicles

What did you love best about Charming?

The character of the protagonist. He is confident, yet nonchalant and yet very pragmatic.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Probably Sig. . .

Which scene was your favorite?

The Protag is saving Sig's life from the Female Vamp. . . the way he negotiates. . . Loved it.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A relief. Until the next Benedict Jacka "Alex Verus" story exposits, or the next Iron Druid Chronicles book, or the next (one of my most favorites) Hard Luck Hank book is released for audio, the hero in this book is inspirational with a depth of emotional revelation that the reader can relate to in diverse ways.

Any additional comments?

Great story!

A hero worth continuing. . .

I'm a fan of the Dresden novels so I was looking forward to the series as something to read in the same genre. There's a bit of snark, a lot of action, a good bit of background folklore to develop the fantasy and the start of a romantic interest.

I personally like the urban fantasy series because I like imagining what it would be like to have a fantastical situation overlaid on mundane life. I think it's a tricky genre because you have to blend what's real and unreal in a convincing way and I think the author did a good job here.

The author also hinted at underground groups that were political powers to be discussed in future novels. I'm hopeful that this will really become fleshed out into something really rich in storytelling.

All in all I think this is a very strong start to a very interesting series and I'm looking forward to the next book.

A good urban fantasy action series
