This collection of short stories and novelettes includes the previously published stories "The Potter's Daughter" (a prequel to the novel The Element of Fire), "Holy Places", "Rites of Passage", "Houses of the Dead", "Reflections" (the Giliead and Ilias stories, prequels to the Fall of Ile-Rien trilogy), as well as "Night at the Opera" (a Nicholas and Reynard story original to this collection, set before the Nebula-nominated novel The Death of the Necromancer).

The narrator sounds angry all the time, like he's spitting out the stories - it's awful, not at all the tone they were written in! I have all of these in print in the original Black Gate Magazines they were published in but was excited to see them compiled into one volume as an audiobook. I love the stories, and they're must-reads for any fans of Ile-Rien. But I'll never be listening to anything this guy narrates again!

lovely stories, terrible narrator

Short stories but nicely satisfying. I will go find the related novels. Very different from Murderbot Diaries but very enjoyable. The characters have quirks and non-Disney behaviors but are still very engaging. Excellent narrator, good at both genders. He used UK voices to distinguish ancient Mediterranean characters but I found it worked for me. Excellent characterization brought the characters to life without over acting.

Great little set of gems

Martha Wells has made it into my all-time top five favorite authors. As far as I’m concerned, she can do no wrong, whether you’re talking character development, setting,
World building, or storytelling, Ms Wells is an artist at the top of her game.

As always, Martha Wells rocks!
