Publisher's summary

A bio-engineered dog fights for its life and its right to life. From the Arthur C. Clark Award-winning author of CHILDREN OF TIME.

My name is Rex. I am a good dog.

Rex is also seven foot tall at the shoulder, bulletproof, bristling with heavy calibre weaponry and his voice resonates with subsonics especially designed to instil fear. With Dragon, Honey and Bees, he's part of a Multiform Assault Pack operating in the lawless anarchy of Campeche, Mexico. A genetically engineered Bioform, he's a deadly weapon in a dirty war. All he wants to be is a Good Dog. And to do that he must do exactly what Master says and Master says he's got to kill a lot of enemies.

But who, exactly, are the enemies? What happens when Master is tried as a war criminal? What rights does the Geneva Convention grant weapons? Do Rex and his fellow Bioforms even have a right to exist?

And what happens when Rex slips his leash?

Unique story w/ moral dilema

This is a story that moves quickly detailing the thoughts and actions of a genetically engineered dog/human/AI hybrid and his companions, all of whm were designed/bred as soldiers.
The dilemma of what constitutes a "person" is a central theme. Though the book isn't long enough to do much more than scratch the surface of the question, it does give you a different perspective that the typical self-aware robot kind of thing.
Dog people will really like this book. It a good bit faster paced than the Children of Time books. I liked it.

The Depths of Questions Eternal

This was not the brain-candy read/listen I first took it be.
I lost count of how many existential topics, epiphanies and quandaries this book dredged up so subtly. It was like being filleted alive without noticing. I can’t even look at my dog right now… and that is the least of it.

Excellent work, as expected

Adrian Tchaikovsky never fails to please, but this was an exceptional story. Hopefully we see it made into a miniseries

Liked

Prologue was much too long. Love stories with the inner voice of robot types. So few of them!

Fantastic concept and execution!

The narrator for Rex really gave a less than stellar performance. They were a great choice given their voice was perfect for what you'd might expect Rex to sound like and was pretty good with the other characters as well. Unfortunately, their pronunciation of several words was pretty off the mark and really broke the emersion of the story telling for me. The other Actors were fantastic!

Adrian does it again

Adrian has an uncanny ability to out us in the minds of "aliens" and ask us probing questions.

Great drama, great narration, interesting, relevant topics

The narrator does a fantastic job with what is another of Adrian Tchaikovsky’s great dramas. With a canine bioform protagonist, and a number of interesting characters and perspectives, this is a book that also serves up a refreshingly contemporary ethical issue.
