About this listen

A sweeping adventure, set in the late 19th century, about science, love, and finding your place in the world, perfect for fans of Ruta Sepetys and Julie Berry.

Seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Bertelsen dreams of becoming an astronomer, but she knows such dreams are as unreachable as the stars she so deeply adores. As a Mormon girl, her duty is to her family and, in a not too far away future, to the man who'll choose to marry her.

When she unexpectedly finds herself in Colorado, she's tempted by the total eclipse of the sun that's about to happen - and maybe even meeting up with the female scientists she's long admired. Elizabeth must learn to navigate this new world of possibility: With her familial duties and faith tugging at her heartstrings, a new romance on the horizon, and the study of the night sky calling to her, she can't possibly have it all...can she?

I don't normally read historical fiction, but I like the author and have read most of her books. I really enjoyed this! it kept me interested throughout, the characters are lovable, and it has a good message. thanks Rosalyn!

Although this book was assigned for a class, I could not stop listening. This is a truly beautiful coming of age story about a young woman learning to balance her responsibilities and her dreams, her love of God and her love of science and learning, the life expected of her and the life she doesn't even realize she's allowed to want. I cried several times and I'm about to start it over and listen again. This historical fiction story calls up similar feelings as Jacob Have I Loved by Katherine Patterson, which was my favorite piece of fiction, but I believe it may have been usurped by Beyond the Mapped Stars.

This book is amazing

Awesome story, and I loved how she parallels the main character's scientific journey toward knowledge with her journey to understanding her world, meeting Jane Manning James as well as the scientists, and exploring how the Relief Society sisters used to give blessings. I just wish the narrator knew how to pronounce Vilate Ann's name (hint: her name is Violet, but it's spelled by a less-educated parent. No, it is not Vuh-LATE.).

Excellent novel, flawed narration
