About this listen

For fans of The Nightingale and All the Light We Cannot See, a spellbinding story of impossible love set against the backdrop of the Nazi regime.

She must choose between loyalty to her country or a love that could be her destruction....

As the dutiful daughter of a high-ranking Nazi officer, Hetty Heinrich is keen to play her part in the glorious new Thousand Year Reich. But she never imagines that all she believes and knows about her world will come into stark conflict when she encounters Walter, a Jewish friend from the past, who stirs dangerous feelings in her. Confused and conflicted, Hetty doesn’t know whom she can trust and where she can turn to, especially when she discovers that someone has been watching her.

Realizing she is taking a huge risk - but unable to resist the intense attraction she has for Walter - she embarks on a secret love affair with him. Together, they dream about when the war will be over and plan for their future. But as the rising tide of anti-Semitism threatens to engulf them, Hetty and Walter will be forced to take extreme measures.

Will the steady march of dark forces destroy Hetty’s universe - or can love ultimately triumph? Propulsive, deeply affecting, and inspired by the author’s family history, Daughter of the Reich is a mesmerizing pause-resister filled with vivid characters and a meticulously researched portrait of Nazi Germany. In this riveting story of passion, courage, and morality, Louise Fein introduces a bold young woman determined to tread the treacherous path of survival and freedom, showing listeners the strength in the power of love and reminding us that the past must never be forgotten.

Hope at the end??

I found this story very different from all the other WW 2 books I have read. About a love lost real thinking of the Nazis explained, division in family where some are Nazis and others dont agree!! But the saddest gut wrenching part is the loss of your life even though living by losing not only your love but your only child in life. Was just to sad for me this story, even though i have read many more stories that are also true.

Great Book, Poor Character Narration

Loved this book. Great storyline. Although the character voices were terrible and sometimes it was difficult knowing who was talking or if the main character was speaking or thinking.

The perspective

I couldn’t believe the perspective of the main character. I think because she was so youthful and the propaganda doled out to the country at the time. I’m glad Although it was tough to listen to I’m thankful to listen throughout. All should hear this book and the message

Magnificent!

This book was so painful but magnificent at the same time. This is definitely my book of the year! One I will certainly listen to many times. The characters were so well developed. A perfect mixture of fiction and history. As I listened I often wondered if Hetty would survive the war, and if her story would be similar to Anne Frank’s- only known to us because of the journal she left behind. I almost always can anticipate the end of the story, but this one has me waiting til the very end to know what would happen to my favorite characters, and my least favorite. Have a box of tissue nearby- you’ll need it!

Thoroughly enjoyable

Most books are written depicting WWII. One does not usually think about the early years of Hitler and his regime. This book, although fictional, was eye opening. Definitely worth the read.

Amazing little tweaking

I loved the story and the depth to the story I wish the ending was different with Hetty and Walter ending up together in England or Walter was able to find hetty and start a life with her after the war.
