About this listen

Juggling life as a superhero with college and a social life is hard, but Shawn Park, a.k.a. Surge, feels he's killing it. Things look even brighter when he makes a connection with the sweet but shy new barista at his favorite coffee shop. Maybe, a guy really can have it all...but appearances can be deceiving.

Apparition just wants her supervillain father to be proud of her, and she'll do anything to accomplish that: even disguise herself as mild-mannered coffee shop employee Nikki to get close to the superhero he's stalking. However, between his charming smile and kind words, she finds herself hopelessly drawn the good-natured Shawn.

As the chemistry between Shawn and Nikki sizzles, the tension between Surge and Apparition grows. If he finds out the truth, they could be headed for something far more explosive than the average breakup.

Romance can be dangerous

Blind Date with a Supervillain is a funny novella about finding love in unexpected places.

I love Nikki, she is adorably awkward as she navigates the world of social interaction for the first time.

She has so much of a personality flip when she's the supervillain Apparition, all of the awkwardness leaves and she has such a mask of confidence. But that's all it is... a mask.

Don't worry I told you this was funny remember. Nikki's story about a socially awkward flood is perfectly balanced by Shawn Parks, the superhero Surge, as he tries and fails to fly under the radar in his small college town.

No night of pizza and studying, is safe when the Mayor has built his own light to signal you with. One that you've repeatedly told him not to use.

Nikki and Shawn's stories are compelling on their own but put them together and you get an hilarious cozy romance that beats anything Hallmark can churn out.

A great romance short

I randomly picked this little beauty up without realizing it had ties to another series the author wrote. Other than that, I loved the story and the characters. Not her father though. I have a particular hate for abusers of women and children.

I think that the story could have been dragged out a bit more to build more of the relationship between the two However, I still found the current story quite enjoyable.

Short, Cliched Fun

This is the first book in the mostly standalone Supervillain Romance Project of H. L. Burke's SVR Universe. Following completely new characters from the previous series set in this world, this story is a fun romp taking cliches from various romance stories (guy meets cute girl in a coffee shop) and poking light fun at some of the superhero quirks (giant light-up signal on a rooftop which would only work on cloudy nights) and combines it with characters that actually feel real.

The story's not perfect - for me, the timeline was a bit too rushed. Shawn was declaring he was in love with Nikki after only a few weeks. But it fits with the genre.

Narrator Kylah does a great job bringing them to life. She especially nails the main character as a girl with ZERO social skills trying too hard to make friendships happen. All her voices are nice and distinct.

In terms of content, this is pretty clean. No language, no drinking, mild superpowered fighting that leads to mostly minor injuries, two characters kiss and one describes another as "very VERY hot".

Awww

This story is so sweet with just the right amount of angst. Main girl just deserves some love and the sweet main guy is the one to show it to her. Also to those who worry about ranchy romance novels don’t be, just kiss and hugs here. Overall a really sweet story where the hero shows the villain a better life where people care about her as a person.
