About this listen

Searching for redemption in the shifting realm between the human and fae worlds, not-so-reformed fae steward Athelas seems likely instead to find death, dismemberment, and deadly magic . . .

Exiled, excommunicated, and with a bounty on his head, Athelas is lying low in Seoul for exactly one reason: he has a wedding to attend. Whether or not he's welcome is another matter.

Luckily for Athelas, several bodies have turned up with their soft insides gnawed out, whether by magic or Behindkind—and the latest of those bodies is at the very wedding hall he has been staking out. The Behindkind investigators suspect one of Athelas's housemates: YeoWoo, a gumiho with a thirst for revenge and an even greater appetite for soft underbelly than Athelas. To buy herself time, YeoWoo barters alibis with the suspiciously quiet fae sharing her house, but to remain free, she must find the real murderer.

By joining the investigation, Athelas has exactly the chance he needs to prove that he is now a repentant, changed, and selfless fae, bent on atoning for former deeds . . . no matter how many Behindkind and humans he has to cut through to confirm that impression.

I loved Gingell’s City Between series! I couldn’t believe it when I heard that she was writing a spin off series about Athelas. This is the perfect start to a new series. I don’t typically like morally gray characters, but I loved Athelas in CB - The World Behind is Athelas trying to find the path of redemption so that he can convince Pet that he has reformed.

A redemption story!

I was so excited to see this series is starting to come out in audiobook format. The narrator does a great job and the story is fantastic!!

Loved it!!

I bought this audiobook after reading and loving the novels in this series and The City Behind series. This narrator's stereotyped "Asian" accents are shameful and took me right out of a story that I loved in print. I can't bear to listen to it and I can't even return it because I purchased it instead of using credits.

Why are narrators using stereotyped accents in the 21st century?

i liked the story. although the violence became tedious. i like the universe that the author has creatsd..

The reader.... he reads well but his voice is plummy and not clear enough. i had to back up and repeat sections. i also had to increase the speed to 1.05 to listen at all. But then at times the narration would speed up dramatically.

The producer did not do a good job of keeping the recording's volume level or reader speed under comtrol.

A natural follow on from the between series. Great story, great characters. It is let down by the narrator though. Terrible accents and very little distinction between characters made it tough to listen to. I found myself having to repeat sections several times to understand what was happening. Worth putting up with though for Gingell’s writing.

Great to be back in the behind

I like the complexity of Athelas' character. I did not like the slow drawn out voices the narrator used. It actually made it difficult to follow what he was saying. Looking forward to book 2!

I was just happy to be back in Gingell's world

Not as good as the previous series because it lacked the balance character set that I was accustomed to. With 2 cold & selfish leads the Machiavellian plotting was a bit much & I lost interest. Add to that the fact that we only get to see Pet & Zero through the Stuard's eyes briefly...it just didn't live up.

Too much Machiavellian Plotting & not enough Pet
