About this listen

In the spellbinding sequel to Blood Like Magic, Voya fights to save her witch community from a terrible future in this “poignant, smart, and wholly unique” (Tracy Deonn, New York Times bestselling author of Legendborn) novel that’s perfect for fans of Legendborn and Cemetery Boys.

Voya Thomas may have passed her Calling to become a full-fledged witch, but the cost was higher than she’d ever imagined.

Her grandmother is gone.

Her cousin hates her.

And her family doesn’t believe that she has what it takes to lead them.

What’s more, Voya can’t let go of her feelings for Luc, sponsor son of the genius billionaire Justin Tremblay—the man that Luc believes Voya killed. Consequently, Luc wants nothing to do with her. Even her own ancestors seem to have lost faith in her. Every day Voya begs for their guidance, but her calls go unanswered.

As Voya struggles to convince everyone—herself included—that she can be a good Matriarch, she has a vision of a terrifying, deadly future. A vision that would spell the end of the Toronto witches. With a newfound sense of purpose, Voya must do whatever it takes to bring her shattered community together and stop what's coming for them before it’s too late.

Even if it means taking down the boy she loves—who might be the mastermind behind the coming devastation.

Critic reviews

"Abbott-Pratt’s true-to-life voices not only make it easy to tell the large cast of characters apart but they also endow the characters with distinct personalities. Abbott-Pratt excels at the type of youthful voices needed for YA narration."–AudioFile Magazine

Fantastic Duology

I was swept up in this series, patiently waiting for book two. The seamless merging of black witch magic, multicultural backgrounds and SF/technology made it both unique and spellbinding.

The writing is beautiful, contemporary and instantly engaging. The use of slang smart and effective for creating a believable world. I loved the sense of family and the universal need for belonging. The plot twist not expected.

And? The narration by Joniece Abbott-Pratt makes it even more real. More beautiful!

An Excellent story, and so well done!

I really enjoyed this duology. I was so invested in the characters, the story. There were a lot of plot twists in this second book with made it even more engaging. I’m here for these black fantasy writers!

Genius Continued.

The character development from the first novel is stupendous. I loved experiencing the dialogue between characters, the nuances of the relationships, and my own experiences of processing grief by experience their stories.

It’s a wonderful work that reflects the times we’re living in. That’s what powerful art is supposed to do. I am grateful to have had this experience.

Even better than the first book

I enjoyed the series, but especially the second book. It's a unique world that mixes magic and tech. There is a lot about family dynamics and that's not usually my thing, but I got invested. I enjoyed seeing how the characters' actions in the first book got spun out into various consequences in the sequel--how the past, present, and future interacted. I got caught up in the suspense. Some twists I saw coming, some I did not. The narrator was good. Overall an enjoyable listen.

This book is sparked!

Wow! This was actually a great second book. I had a few grievances, but honestly, the good outweighed the negative so it's not worth mentioning... except one thing. So, incoming spoiler alert!
.
.
.
The secret villain that I won't name... well, them being still treated as part of the family was wild to me. They you know what 2 people and let another you know what AND was about to let the whole community suffer.

Their punishment wasn't enough, or it could have been except they're part of the family and showing up gatherings. That was too hard to believe. But that's my only gripe.
