Comical paranormal fiction novel

This was quite a comical paranormal fiction novel about a regular guy who unexpectedly inherits a large fortune. Two of his family friends find out and want in on the money and that’s where the shenanigans begin. There was also a romantic aspect which worked well. The pace was steady and the main character Alex was very likable. The paranormal side to the story added to the uniqueness to it.
The narrator did a great job with the voices and distinguished between the characters well. He was easy to understand and brought the story to life.

I would like to thank the author/narrator/publisher for generously providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A truly enthralling tale!

Most people are interested in their family history. To take a DNA test to find more relations is not uncommon today. However, to find you are the only living heir, to a manor house. WOW!! that would be mind boggling.
The unexpected surprises don't stop there, but I hate ruining a great yarn.
Oh, if you listen to the audio rendition of this story, with such a skilled narrator, you will find that you are mesmerized by the story.

A really solid book

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I really thought this was a pretty good book. The story line was interesting and, although there wasn't a TON of action, there was intrigue and plot. There was some humor sprinkled in, as well, which is always nice. The narration was pretty good too. So, an all around decent book. I would consider it worth a credit.

** spoiler alert ** An old house? Check.

An old house with a great history? Check.

Coming into money from an unknown person so you can live in said house? Check.

I loved this story! It was fast-paced, very engaging and entertaining, and I’d definitely listen to this author again. The descriptions were spot on, so it was super easy to imagine what the characters were seeing. I think my only real issue was the robotic dialogue; there were little to no contractions used. Why Mr. Taylor? What English-speaking person (English as their first language, that is) speaks so proper naturally? I’m sure there are some, but still. Robotic dialogue is equal to unnatural-sounding dialogue, in my opinion. I really can’t stand that. Had the narrator not been good at his job (made it less distracting), I probably wouldn’t have gotten very far in the story. There was also the issue of the author seemingly scared to use pronouns. Yes, pronouns are used but not as often as one would think. It was usually always "so-and-so did this, so-and-so did that." I can understand using the character's name when there are multiple characters in the scene. But when there is just one or two, use some pronouns.

When Alex met with the lawyer the first time in New York, why was there so much emphasis on “whiskey,” at least based on the way the narrator said it? I was waiting for the lawyer or someone to tell Alex that his family hadn’t had anything to do with the whiskey business, instead, they’d made their money doing something bad or frowned upon. Either way, Mr. Nevitt did a great job and knows his work and provided a variety of voices for the characters; all of which added to the story making it better. I think his voices for Brenda and Connie were spot on, especially Brenda! Again, he did a great job!

Questions/Comments:

I get Alex didn’t want Connie and Brenda to cause a scene at his lawyer’s office, but why would he have told them where he lived? Why wouldn’t he have just met them somewhere else? Yes, I know without them having gone to the house, there would have been no story. But still. Alex didn’t like them. He hadn’t spoken to either in several months. He didn’t want to deal with them.

Just curious... There’s the part when Alex decides he’s going to tell the ladies the story as to how he ended up in the situation he was currently in. Yet, it was either later that evening or the following evening when he decides to tell them about the DNA test. Wouldn’t that have been the main part of the story he’d told the previous day?

I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I would definitely recommend this story.

An old manor with lots of secrets!

This was such a fun book! Alex is just a regular guy living in Canada when he gets a call telling him that his long lost relatives have left an old manor & it’s entire estate to him. Alex travels to the US to accept the home, and that’s when trouble begins.. two of Alex’s “friends” from his past show up at his doorstep and chaos ensues. I must say, I loved these two troublemakers because they were narrated so perfectly and I felt like I could see them so clearly. What set this book apart from other cozy mysteries is that the plot line is so different and fresh. It’s not your typical murder that gets solved, but rather a longer form story about jealousy, greed & a ghost that will do anything to get justice for Alex. Very well narrated, and very immersive!

Mystery, ghosts and romance

This is an enjoyable story of an unexpected inheritance, new found romance, greedy hangers-on and a ghostly protector. It is an entertaining story with a bit of the supernatural mixed in and with characters you immediately like and others that you take an instant dislike to. Brenda and Connie are both self-centred, money-grabbing, obnoxious characters that the narrator of the audiobook portrays perfectly. The voices he used suited their personalities to a tee and really brought out how dislikable and annoying these characters were. I liked the sweet development of Alex and Maggie’s relationship and the protectiveness of Rebecca Farnsworth’s ghost. This story had humour, mystery and romance, and excellent narration that brings the story to life.
