About this listen

"You can read this story without having read anything else by Olson, and I highly recommend it." (Charles de Lint, author of The Newford series and Moonheart, in the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction)

All her life, Sashi’s mother warned her not to get involved with werewolf problems. But Sashi, a witch who uses magic to heal sick and injured bodies, has never made a habit of ignoring trauma. When she meets an abused shapeshifter that no one else seems willing to help, Sashi will risk everything - including a budding romance with a human, Will - to save a woman who can’t save herself.

Good, but written in first person present tense

Good story, but it's written in first person present tense which is hard to follow as a reader. The narrator helps a lot in that regard, though

More please

More old world stories Ms. Olson - pretty please. I know you’re probably done with this set of tales but as a reader it’s hard to let go.

awesome!

I love The Old World and any story from it. The narrator was great and I loved getting to see how Will and Sashi met. Great story!

Great 1st book in Series

I had not read/listened to this author before, I am quite glad I found her. This is a great story to listen to partly because the author wrote a Great Story and partly because the narrator does such a wonderful job. I enjoyed this story so much went and bought next Audible book in Series and will start listening next.

Well written, prefer more positives

Good fiction stories have their ups and downs and a variety of struggles; I prefer for those stories to have more positive outcomes than negative ones or at least the big climax towards the end where the good guy wins or achieves his/her goal(s).
Mainly I prefer to feel something positive at the end or motivated or at least excited to see how the story continues and for me none of these happened, hence the 3 stars, me returning this book and not getting the next in the series.
This author is obviously talented and maybe darkness is her thing but I’d prefer some light with or after the dark.
Btw - narrator did a good job!

Five Stars for Narrator Amy McFadden!

I enjoy Melissa Olson’s Scarlett Bernard series, so I read this novella to learn more about Sashi and Will. This short, quick-read novella is a romance-type prequel to the Scarlett Bernard UF world. The main storyline focuses on Sashi Durga Noring, a 21-yr old witch whose magical speciality is healing or Thaumaturgy. Sachi’s controlling mother is a world-renowned oncologist, who is treating a handsome man named Will, who is now in remission. Surprised? There are other boilerplate setups.

I didn’t love the second storyline about Astrid the werewolf, who is abused, beaten, and raped by her Alpha Wolf partner. I carried on reading, because Melissa Olson always interweaves plots toward the end, so it was crucial to know Astrid’s story. Will Sachi fall for Will? Will Oncologist Mom tolerate Will? How much abuse will Astrid suffer? Will romance-fans find even a smidge of HEA at the denouement?

Warning: There are bloody and wincingly crunchy, domestic-violence scenarios.
