Publisher's summary

Tess Gerritsen again weaves frighteningly realistic medical detail into heart-stopping suspense, as a small-town doctor races to unravel the roots of a violent epidemic - before it destroys everything she loves.

Lapped by the gentle waters of Locust Lake, the small resort town of Tranquility, Maine, seems like the perfect spot for Dr. Claire Elliot to shelter her adolescent son, Noah, from the distractions of the big city, and the lingering memory of his father's death. She's also hopeful that she can earn the trust of the town as she builds a new practice. But all her plans unravel with the news of a shocking incident: a teenage boy under her care has committed an appalling act of violence.

Claire has stopped prescribing a controversial drug to the troubled boy, a decision that some in town now second-guess. But before she can defend herself, a rash of new teenage violence erupts in Tranquility, forcing Claire to perform increasingly risky emergency procedures. And when one of her patients dies, the town's panic turns to fury.

Shaken by accusations, and fearful that Noah is now at risk, Claire desperately searches for a medical cause behind the murderous epidemic. She begins to suspect that the placid waters of Locust lake conceal a disturbing history - and an insidiously lethal danger. But while Claire races to save the town - and her son - from harm, she discovers an even greater threat: a shocking conspiracy to manipulate nature, and turn innocents to slaughter.

Critic reviews

"[An] intricate thriller... a tale sure to fascinate." (Stephen King)
"Tess Gerritsen is an automatic must-read in my house; what Anne Rice is to vampires, Gerritsen is to the tale of medical suspense. She is better than Palmer, better than Cook... yes, even better than Crichton. If you've never read Gerritsen, figure in the price of electricity when you buy your first novel by her... 'cause baby, you are going to keep it up all night." ( People)

Bloodstream

The heart pounding drama I have come to expect from Gerritsen. Suspense up to the very end. Cannot wait to enjoy another drama from this author.

Kinda Odd

This was not one of Tess Gerritsen's best works. It was an okay read. The plot was a little on the bizarre side...It is more science fiction.

Not her best

This is the first of her books that I did not like. The plot was okay, not as awesome as her other ones. The story dragged for a while. The author brought in too many characters without any purpose. to the plot.

The narrator was pretty good.

Not as good as expected

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not! It was kind of slow and was thrilled with the narrator.

If you’ve listened to books by Tess Gerritsen before, how does this one compare?

This was only the second book I have read of hers and I think harvest was far superior in all aspects.

What aspect of Richard Poe’s performance would you have changed?

I like a narrator that can give the main characters of the book a distinct voice. Richard Poe did not do a great job with that. especially the female voices. J

Any additional comments?

Just overall not a great listen. Maybe it would be better if I had just read the book as opposed to listening to it.

Very Suspenseful!

A couple of times I thought this was going to be a Stephen King or Dean Koontz type of book. Luckily it didn't go that far. It's more like an amp'ed up Robin Cook -- a very suspenseful medical mystery. I certainly recommend it to mystery/thriller lovers.

I can't imagine anyone doing a better job with the narration. Richard Poe nailed it.

THE STREAM OF SLAUGHTER

ELWIN WAS AN EVOLUTIONARY DEAD END
I have finally figured it out. Tess Gerritsen has been reincarnated several times and she remembers all her former lives. It is the only way she could know what it is like to be a teenage boy, girl, old man, old woman, middle aged, in love, not loved, etc... She gets all these emotions perfect. In most of her books I always feel a connection to her. She is one of my favorites and this is one of my favorites.

THE CHILDREN WERE IN THE ATTIC
Had this been written today, instead of the 90's this would probably be a Zombie book. It has a lot of the elements that make a good Zombie story. Parts are scary, parts are gory, parts are science weird and it is mostly suspenseful. This is early Tess, when she wrote mostly on the edge and her writing was closer to Koontz and King. This is before she became famous with Rizzoli. Her writing today is a lot tamer and aimed more at the gentler gender.

BETTER A WITCH THAN A VEGETARIAN
TG is famous for her young doctors who get into trouble for doing the right thing and going against the establishment. This is no different. If you have ever found yourself having to take an unpopular stand, you will appreciate the main character and how well TG makes you feel what the character is going through. Some of the side stories are cute, such as Elwin and the Witch. The story also has lots of twists and some science. I loved it.

Richard Poe
He is perfect.

Not my favorite by Tess Gerritsen

I have enjoyed other books by this author; this one not so much. It began as a medical thriller but sort of morphed into a rather stilted romance novel. I became progressively disengaged as the plot advanced.
