About this listen

The world’s greatest thriller writers prove they’re up to a unique challenge in this action-packed, audio-original collection.

It all started with a simple, yet sneakily difficult challenge from global best-selling author Harlan Coben: Pick a bird of prey, then use it as the inspiration for a brand-new story.

The response from some of the best writers on the planet: Game on!

The result: Eleven stories that are twisty, scary, surprising and bursting with imagination. An egg worth more than its weight in gold. A mysterious operative known only as Owl. An eagle-watcher who sees more than she should. Even a story that somehow places the Maltese Falcon in a nursing home.

Birds of Prey: The Harlan Coben Challenge is a highly bingeable audiobook that’s a treat for thriller fans.

Introduced by Harlan Coben, Birds of Prey features these stories:

  • “The Coffin Bearer” by Tess Gerritsen
  • “Precious Cargo” by C.J. Box
  • “Owl” by Kathy Reichs
  • “Kudzu” by Ace Atkins
  • “Predator or Prey?” by Heather Graham
  • “Silent as a Shadow” by S.A. Cosby
  • “Jail Birds” by Hank Phillippi Ryan
  • “The Falcon” by Robert Dugoni
  • “Watchers” by Allison Brennan
  • “Red of Beak and Claw” by Gregg Hurwitz
  • “Hawkshaw Hunting” by Kelley Armstrong

Birds of Prey: The Harlan Coben Challenge was created with International Thriller Writers (ITW). C.J. Box served as project editor.

Lots of good stories here

An excellent set of short crime stories by many of the most popular authors. Each one is read by a different narrator and all did a find job in my opinion.

Good group of short stories

A collection of short stories, with a prompt about birds of prey from Harlan. Coban brings lots of interesting versions, some better than the others.

Enjoyable stories

I enjoyed each of the stories by most of my favorite authors. They all had the suspense and mystery that their full length books have. However, I now know why they hire professional actors (readers) to perform the stories. With the the exception of a few authors who are good performers many of the stories were sorely lacking in personality.

I can’t say which I liked best. I loved all the stories and I loved the introductions by the authors as well. It gave me lots of insight into the life of the authors. I would highly recommend this book to my friends and family even though I only gave it 3 stars.

If you’re perusing and not sure about continuing, don’t quit until you hear the last one. (I liked it most, has steady action and twisty unfolding. Conversely, the second to last was a mean-spirited ode to cellphones, I liked it least.)

What a great book

I wasn't sure I would like this book with all the short stories but it was really well done all these stories were great! I listened to them with Audible. The narrators were very good. Kudos to them all. I would enjoy seeing more of the same. Thank you for some really fantastic stories. I found some new authors because of this book that I have been reading and enjoying. Thank you again for that!
