About this listen

After narrowly escaping the New Lands, Egg is determined to take down ruthless slave trader Roger Pembroke. But war is brewing among the Blue Sea's pirate gangs - and Egg, Guts, and Kira are running out of time to find the Fire King’s treasure and free the Okalu slaves from the silver mine on Sunrise. Can they save Kira’s people before Sunrise is plundered by Ripper Jones’s pirates? Will Burn Healy save the day, or has the legendary captain finally met his match? And will Egg ever win back Millicent from the annoyingly handsome Cyril? This explosive conclusion to Egg’s journey delivers the ultimate combination of humor, heart, and white-knuckle adventure.

Critic reviews

“This is a rip-roaring debut… I highly recommend you grab a copy… The best way I can describe it is Lemony Snicket meets Pirates of the Caribbean, with a sprinkling of Tom Sawyer for good measure.” (Rick Riordan, New York Times best-selling author of the Percy Jackson series on Deadweather and Sunrise)

Terrific adventure, humor, and grand finale!

Excellent plot twists, character development, and dramatic use of setting. The narrator is perfect for the protagonist's voice and all the pirates' voices. Recommend: for readers 10 years old and older (younger kids will enjoy but maybe not appreciate the full story); for anyone who enjoys action/adventures, a bit of romance, clever young heroes who aren't perfect; and for those who are going on a long road trip with kids. This is one the entire family will enjoy and likely stay in the car in the driveway to finish!

Excellent book and series — not just for kids!

The storyline and characters come alive with the performance of Fred Berman — what a great voice actor!

For me, the storyline seems a little older than the 13-ish main characters. They are often treated brutally and roam the islands and seas without much positive adult intervention — so it is not a lighthearted frolicking and fun-filled adventure story. I suppose the storyline is in keeping with classics like Treasure Island and Tom Sawyer.

The author does a good job explaining when the young characters cannot understand the circumstances or repercussions because of their youth, lack of life experience and lack of education. This would be a good series to share between parents and kids — read together. Or, better yet, listened to, since the characters’ voices are so entertaining.

Additionally, the storyline has good moral lessons. And the plights of these teens may be relatable to young readers who experience similar issues or injustices.

I found this book series because I was searching for more Fred Berman performances after being hooked by his narration of Lindsay Buroker’s Star Kingdom space opera series. Berman’s voice characterizations are distinct and easy to follow.
