About this listen
In a fracturing empire spread across savage seas, two young people from different cultures find common purpose.
A nameless girl is the lone survivor when her village is massacred by biomancers, mystical servants of the emperor. Named after her lost village, Bleak Hope is secretly trained by a master Vinchen warrior as an instrument of vengeance.
A boy becomes an orphan on the squalid streets of New Laven and is adopted by one of the most notorious women of the criminal underworld, given the name Red, and trained as a thief and con artist.
When a ganglord named Deadface Drem strikes a bargain with the biomancers to consolidate and rule all the slums of New Laven, the worlds of Hope and Red come crashing together, and their unlikely alliance takes them further than either could have dreamed possible.

Story
After the old gods warred and drove themselves to extinction, the cataclysm of their fall shattered the land of Vigrio. Now, power-hungry jarls carve out petty kingdoms, and monsters stalk the shadow-haunted woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power, promising fame, and fortune for those brave - or desperate - enough to seek them out. As whispers of war echo over the plains and across the fjords, fate follows the footsteps of three people. All three will shape the fate of the world, as it once more teeters on the edge of chaos.

Story
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Great book and performance
This book is a very fine example of fantasy story in tradition od Scott Lynch and Brent Weeks. Little bit of thievery, little bit of killing a lot of baddies, all wraped in wide-eyed outlook on life youths have. What is fantastic, though, is author's reading of it. I enjoyed every minute of narration. Great job!

Vulgarity took away from my enjoyment.
I bought this book after reading a preview in another author’s book. The preview had none of the extremely vulgar sexual language that punctuates the book. The characters had some unique words for things, which was original and somewhat enjoyable. I felt the author’s reading of the story melded all the characters into a similar personality, as he changed his tone and inflection very little. Also, the characters would often say something in a way that seemed out of character for that player. A few times Red’s character said something that I thought another character should call him out for, and they didn’t, so I was irritated. There were a few times I laughed out loud and I did really enjoy the character of Hope, but I am not planning to read the sequels.

I enjoyed it
Took a chance and was quite pleased.
A well done setting with a host of folks that weave an interesting tale.
A bit coming of age but in a way that does not seem forced.
Kept me up late, to finish a chapter.

This book read like a middle grade, but could not be with its content. I did not care for the story or the narrator. This one is not for me.
