About this listen
What is Blur?
Blur is that muddled state we find ourselves in when we experience mind-boggling life events: cancer, illness, deaths, tornados, hurricanes, and now I need to add Covid to that list. A long string of painful losses—loss of a spouse, a family member or close friend, loss of a job, loss of income, loss of home, loss of control, loss of routine—or too many painful unexpected events too close together—too much change, too much demand, too much uncertainty.
Worry, anxiety, lack of sleep, and loss of health overtake us—plus the accompanying barrage of fears and hesitations these stresses bring. Fear of new places and circumstances, fear of driving in unfamiliar areas, fear of learning new information but not remembering it, fear of painful attempts and failures, forgetfulness, confusion, disorientation, loss of balance, loss of trust in others, loss of dreams, loss of passion, loss of enthusiasm, and most devastating of all—loss of trust in ourselves.
There is a path out of Blur! Skill-by-skill, story-by-story, this book will guide you. And this book shares a powerful and inspiring story of love and resilience.
This is also a book about leadership—how to lead in moments when you are in Blur, or your partner, family, or organization is, and you are asked to step up—even when you don’t feel you can, even when others are not there to play their usual parts, even when you find all your stuff plus all their stuff on your plate—and it’s already overflowing. This is a book about clearing the way ahead, even in the worst of times.

Nothing Is Missing is a “sparkling and impassioned story” (Glamour) of what it takes to show up for yourself—and the joy that can come once you do. Raised in a home where food was unstable and anger was the norm, Nicole learned that she needed to take charge of her own safety and security. So she did: She got into an elite private school by talking to a stranger in her dad’s cab, she strategized her way onto Wheel of Fortune to pay for college, she adopted three girls after meeting their mother panhandling, she quit her job to launch her own business, and she struggled.

Marie’s mom once told her, “Nothing in life is that complicated. You can do whatever you set your mind to if you roll up your sleeves. Everything is figureoutable.” Whether you want to leave a dead end job, break an addiction, learn to dance, heal a relationship, or grow a business, Everything is Figureoutable will show you how.

Story
Throughout my life I have done things my way, and they have always worked out - as if I've had luck in my corner. All of my optimism and bravado came to a crashing halt one cold December holiday night, when after an evening out with good friends, I suffered an accident. I was beaten with a pipe and later found under a moving train, resulting in quadriplegia. Given virtually no chance to walk again, I was devastated. But I also had hope, and lots of it. A fire that exists deep within, and has since childhood, burns on no matter the circumstances. I am here for a bigger mission. What would that mission now be?

When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave - "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams" - wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have... and you may find one day that you have less than you think").

Story
Success is not born out of skill, school, where we’re from, who we know, or what we scored on the SAT. None of us were born ready. None of us started life knowing how to fly a plane or launch a company or knit a sweater for our dog. But we are born with something more important than skills. We’re born with optimism—the initial seed for success. Optimism fuels the belief that you can be the one to create the good the world needs. But you’ve got to hone it. And practice it. And determine to live from it.

Story
The practice of mindfulness is most often touted for its profound mind, body, and spirit benefits. Shelly Tygielski here shows that mindfulness can also be a powerful tool for spurring transformative collective action. In a winning combination of memoir, manifesto, and how-to, Tygielski shares her evolution from a Jerusalem-born child of traditional Sephardic Orthodox parents to a middle-class American suburban youth who questioned her faith to a young executive in corporate America.
