About this listen

Amateur sleuth Lady Julia Grey and her detective husband, Nicholas Brisbane, face their latest adventure in this novella by New York Times best-selling author Deanna Raybourn.

It's the autumn of 1890, and almost a year has passed since - much to their surprise - Lady Julia and Nicholas became parents. Just as the couple begins to adapt, a solicitor arrives with a strange bequest. Nicholas, it seems, has inherited a country house - but only if he and his family are in residence from All Hallows' Eve through Bonfire Night.

Neither Lady Julia nor Nicholas is likely to be put off by local legends of ghosts and witches, and the eerie noises and strange lights that flit from room to room simply intrigue them. Until a new lady's maid disappears, igniting a caper that will have explosive results....

The fourth in a series of Lady Julia Grey stories set during traditional English holidays, Bonfire Night follows Silent Night, Midsummer Night, and Twelfth Night.

Oh Julia

Another interesting story and great cast of characters. I truly enjoy this series and wish these were longer.

Sad To See The Series End...

It's hard to believe that I have reached the end of this series... well, I do harbor some hope that this isn't the ultimate end of the series and that Raybourn will one day return to these wonderful characters - after all, the set up is still there for the Rome plot... and the Vespiary hasn't been truly created either... so there are clear foundations laid for new directions!

But, in the meantime, the series seems to conclude on another holiday themed novella. This one covers the late fall (and all the way through Christmas). Brisbane's nefarious sire sets this plot into motion. And while it is not entirely unpredictable, it is a fun and fast-paced listen that I quite enjoyed. I've got to get started listening to something else, now, and I am just sad to say good bye to these characters - I have really enjoyed listening to all of the novellas and novels... and I definitely want to check out Raybourn's other novels, as well as more books performed by this talented narrator!

Novella Fun

Lady Julia and Nicholas have settled into life with young John Nicholas, when a semi-nemesis from their past draws them into his machinations.
I’ve really enjoyed this little novellas in this series and would love to see more.
Archer does a decent job of narration.

Entertaining but....

Would you consider the audio edition of Bonfire Night to be better than the print version?

This is probably better as an audio as it would seem like a 30 min sit com.

Would you recommend Bonfire Night to your friends? Why or why not?

Unlikely

What about Ellen Archer’s performance did you like?

Excellent performance--the only reason to read this in audio format.

Any additional comments?

This is the last of three short stories that should have been one book. All three had good elements and the characters are delightful. I just feel duped when the author is passing off short stories as novels. This series started off well but the "tension" between Julia & Brisbane was getting annoying. Just as this evolves and they become partners we get cheated.
